I feel a little bad about giving this a negative review, since there is no question that the devs have done a very good job upgrading these titles for modern systems and adding all of the extra features you would expect, so if you already know that you like either Heretic or Hexen then by all means buy this; you should not have anything to be disappointed about here. But, since I know this group probably already has bought this, it would be pointless to write a review directed at them.

For the rest of us - those that are on the fence about whether these fairly old titles could still be fun in 2026, and expect a game to stand on its own merit and not propped up by any nostalgia, I have to say that these games are simply NOT FUN to play.

Heretic is quite literally a Doom skin - every monster and weapon has a direct analogue in Doom. But Doom at least has a fast-paced, visceral quality that keeps it entertaining even today. So you should definitely just play Doom instead, even if you, like me, prefer the medieval theme of Heretic.

Hexen at least feels like its own game with different mechanics and gameplay situations compared to other classic FPS titles like Doom, but the gameplay is 90% hunting for switches and the other 10% circle-strafing or kiting very dumb monsters. I was never really excited to open the next door and could not even be bothered to finish it (forcing myself to play through Heretic first probably didn't help).

So TLDR existing fans of these games should be happy, but otherwise I think you can do a lot better these days with any of the many other FPS games having a similar theme.

The problem with a lot of these ancient relics is that they were never actually fun to begin with. They were just novel—there was nothing else like them, so bored cavemen played them out of sheer desperation. For us in the future, there are infinitely better games out there, and the pathetic achievement percentages prove most of you feel the same. I'll probably finish it one day... but only if I force myself to endure that dusty, overrated slog.

yeah these games are good, its a good value, same with DOOM + DOOM II, they run smooth as butter on my 2011 dell latitude e6420 laptop, so like, you'll be fine with whatever your rig is. I dont even have the nvidia gpu version, literally just intel integrated 3000, a Core i5, and 16 gb ddr3 ram. seriously this runs buttery-smooth on anything made after the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stone age just buy it its worth it.
