We are happy to announce that Decadent Heir is participating in the Choose Wisely Festival 2025 — a thematic Steam event dedicated to games where every choice meaningfully shapes the story and its outcomes.

Choose Wisely Festival 2025 brings together projects built around nonlinearity, branching decisions, and strong narrative consequences. During the festival, you’ll discover hundreds of story-driven games, learn about new announcements, watch the showcase, and try out demos.

In Decadent Heir, you step into the shoes of a late–19th-century nobleman caught in political struggle, intricate intrigue, and the rising shadow of revolution.
Here, everything matters — your words, your actions, and even your silence.

What Historical Documents Don’t Tell You

Hello, everyone.
I’d like to share where the development of Decadent Heir currently stands and what’s happening behind the scenes.

Who’s Making the Game.
Most of the work is done by me: narrative design, historical research, scene writing, and Unity assembly. A programmer and UI designer assist on a contract basis when specific technical tasks need to be solved.

The biggest challenge is not letting historical figures become lifeless cardboard silhouettes. When you meet Rasputin, Stolypin, or Lenin, they will be living, complex people with conflicting motivations — not mythologized icons from textbooks.

I work with primary sources: memoirs, diaries, letters. I search for small human details that can be woven naturally into the narrative. For example, that Kerensky was a sickly, limping boy suffering from bone tuberculosis, or that Vladimir Ulyanov’s brother was hanged and buried in a mass grave behind the fortress wall.

No ideology. Only people in a collapsing empire, forced to choose between conscience and survival.

Full Game Structure
Here’s how the acts are structured:

Act I (Demo): Childhood, 1882–1892 — available on Steam
Act II (Complete): Adolescence up to university enrollment
Act III (Assembly in Unity): University years in the capital
Act IV–V (Script in progress): 1905–1917, three career paths:
• Military officer
• Government official
• Revolutionary politician

Each path is its own storyline with unique characters, events, and moral dilemmas.

Current Work
I am currently writing Acts IV and V. The revolutionary/politician route is complete.
The military officer and government official routes are planned for November–December.

Act IV covers the Revolution of 1905 — the first real taste of power, the first serious compromises, and the moment when ideals begin to crack under the pressure of reality.

Meanwhile, the artist is working on illustrations for Act II.

Localization
The game will release in eight languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, and Turkish.

Russian history of the late 19th century deserves a global audience.

Interesting premise, but...

An RPG where you, as it seems, can fight the Bolsheviks and defeat them, is a rarety and thus definitely worth following. Although the store page is already apologetic towards the Bolsheviks. It speaks of 10 million "succumbing to hunger, deprivation, and disease", but not of the many millions who were outright murdered by the Bolsheviks. Why not state these simple, uncontroversial facts? Why this lack of honesty?...

Playtests are planned to begin in the first quarter of 2026, or even earlier if there’s high player demand.

Decadent Heir is a narrative RPG set in the decadent twilight of the Russian Empire — a world where politics, betrayal, and luxury intertwine in a deadly dance of ambition.

What Makes Decadent Heir Unique?

You literally begin the game at your character’s birth and shape their personality through choices you make along the way — developing skills and traits that influence every aspect of the story.
Every decision matters — even small ones, like spending time with your dog or choosing to read a book instead of socializing.

These seemingly minor moments can impact not only the protagonist but the entire world around them — even the fate of a nation.
You’ll be able to revisit and reshape the defining events of an era.

The game embraces the idea of “What if?” — a question that will haunt you throughout your journey, sparking curiosity to see how different choices unfold.
Decadent Heir rewards replayability with a roguelike structure — when your character dies, every new run expands your abilities and opens new ways to change the course of history.

Does the Game Use AI?

Yes — Decadent Heir uses AI to generate illustrations for its text-based scenes.
This serves purely as a visual aid — the soul of the game lies in its mechanics and hand-crafted storytelling.
Every narrative branch is written by hand, without any random generation — it’s a deeply personal work by someone who truly loves history.

ABOUT THE PLAYTESTS

The playtest, like the demo version, includes the first chapter out of five planned.
What’s new in the playtest:
- The first chapter has been reworked in both mechanics and story.
- Numerous fixes and improvements.
- Full Russian voice acting added (it completely changes the experience!).
- Feedback form available via Google.
- Steam achievements added.
- Exclusive reward for playtest participants.

Decadent Heir joins the Steam Debut Festival 2025!

Greetings!

Decadent Heir is part of the Steam Debut Festival 2025 — an event where debut games meet players for the very first time! This is my first major game, and I’m proud to share it with you — even if for now it’s only as a demo. But that’s just for now.

The demo lets you play through the entire first act and experience the childhood years of a nobleman in the setting of the Russian Empire during the Decadent era.

So this is just a straight Life and Suffering of Sir Brante ripoff?

You're just going to directly copy that game and release it as if you had made your own game? But with much worse English translation that sounds ridiculous half the time?
