TANUKI: Pon's Summer: Release Date Shift & Progress Report

Hello again!

Pon was riding around town so much the bike chain got red-hot. Then, one glance at the calendar, and it’s December already?! It was July just a moment ago! Time for important end-of-the-year news!

First of all, the game’s release window is moved to 2026, with a more precise date to be announced later. We're sorry to those who may be disappointed, and looking forward to playing Pon's adventure soon. Delaying a game is never easy, but we’re confident that some extra development time will be put to good use.

In fact, we’ll use this opportunity to share some of the stuff we’ve been working on!
We were overwhelmed by the great feedback and warm response to the demo! But, we were inspired to work even harder on features that would improve the experience for all players! Here's a taste of what we've been doing:

Navigation improvements - from player-placed tags to a minimap. We heard that sometimes finding your way around town was a bit tough. We wanted to give you some tools to make sure your deliveries are a breeze!
Mission improvements - objective markers, player-chosen mission order. Less restricted, more exploration-friendly.
A lot more Activities! - important jobs and engrossing hobbies for Pon, their amount and variety are ever-growing.
New Town - a whole complete island to explore, just across the bay.

A little more about this new area.
Once you get used to lush forest, a short train ride will take you to the town across the bay. There are different flavors of a small comfy town, after all. Rocky mountainside places have their own appeal, doubly so if you’re a BMX-fiend! Rich colors, windier paths, trickier rails to grind. The town has a different feel to it, but it will gladly welcome a busy tanuki.
And, of course, a new town means new people to meet and new things to do. Learning a respectable skill from a local stonemason, or just helping a local business stay afloat!

As it turns out, financing and repairing a grand shrine doesn’t come easy to a pair of short paws. There are more and more skills for Pon to learn: people are willing to teach him, but the effort will have to be all his! From rolling giant boulders (Sisyphus would be jealous) to operating heavy machinery, the tanuki will have a summer to remember.

There’s also time for more meditative hobbies. Scouting for stag beetles, rare butterflies and the like to fill your journal, for example. Or trying your best to dig your paws in and not let your absolute WHOPPER of a catch drag you into the river while fishing!

As you can see we've been working super hard to make TANUKI: Pon's Summer the best experience it can be!

We're feeling pretty confident about our hard work so far, and we actually feel the current demo is not-representative of our wonderful world anymore!

In the coming days the demo download will be removed. We wanted to give you some more time if you'd like to try it out. But, rest assured the final experience will be much improved!

The coming months will still be full of important development. Exploring a new feel for narrative and dialogues, improved character models and animations, polishing existing activities and adding more, maybe we’ll make a junk-based helicopter…

Hehe, yeah, you’ve seen the title.

Pon’s getting all the closer to world domination! WE’RE ACTUALLY DOING IT.

Thank you guys for helping us hit our first huge milestone. We are very appreciative of everyone's support! We're really glad that everyone is enjoying their small glimpses of Pon's world so far. We will be using this milestone excitement to work even harder on the development!.

Seeing the wishlist counter growing is such a nice sight, we want to make sure that more players get a chance to participate in our very first contest!

So, we’re extending the deadline for tricks contest submissions.

Let us get through the requirements, just in case:

Submit a combo chain of tricks. It’s gotta be clean, or long, or crazy, or all of the things combined! Make your skills and imagination run wild.
Post your clip on X with the hashtag #tanukiponssummer
This is not a contest of popularity. The combo judges from Denkiworks and CRITICAL REFLEX will rule out their decision solely based on what we deem worthy of the prizes.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE

Submit before 21/08/2025, 8 pm PST. Yep, ten more days to hone your BMXing.

PRIZES

A digital copy of the full game at launch. At least the delivery won’t be postponed by some sudden side hustles of the delivery guy.
A commemorative shrine decoration. Nothing like a whole world being reminded of your coolness till the end of time, right?

There are only three Champions-to-be. Can you become one of them? Only Tanuki gods can tell but they won’t.

And what better way than to kick off this season with a game that literally has summer in the title? It’s time to go on a tricks rampage, shred the streets, hit the ramps, and wreak chaos around town. And we’ve got the best guy for it.

Yeah, here goes our Pon, the best delivery person (or rather a Tanuki?) for all the new stuff and whatnot.

📦: WHAT’S INSIDE THE DEMO PACKAGE?

Express zero regard for municipal safety standards!

Pon might be a law-abiding citizen (to a degree), but let’s be honest, he’s driven by pure instinct for adrenaline pumping in the veins and backflips on power lines. Don’t we all? Help Pon to be the best he can be: an absolute BMX beast.

Engage in three main quests out of nuh uh 🤐

Get the hang of every BMX trick, Shrine restoration, and what makes one a great neighbour. The summer may have only just begun, but you can already take a peak of what’s to come.

The Shrine isn’t the only thing in dire need of restoration. The town’s filled with folks that would very much like Pon’s help as well. Fix their business, fix their inspo, fix their life. Tanuki therapy, anyone?

Live an extraordinary Tanuki life

Dip Pon’s paws into the sea of the many side hustle activities the town has to offer… limited to three in this particular demo. We’ve gotta keep you craving more, right?

Lay the foundation of your Shrine

The Shrine grounds seem a little empty at first. Completely empty, to be precise, so it might not be easy to properly prepare for a Matsuri festival on day one. But Pon’s got a whole month ahead and you can help the poor little Tanuki get started!

Explore all nooks and crannies of the first town

Pon might have the soul of an artist, as he sees the town as his canvas, making sure to help him paint the town with tricks.

I'm driving up the ramp and then pressing L down and B at the same time – but nothing happens. I also tried just pulling L down, but it always resets to the beginning. Any tips or tricks to get it working?

Demo is fun but it depends too much from BMX tricks

I liked the idea of this game, and the mood and vibe the video gave, but what I played in the demo is not really the same as what advertised. This is fundamentally a BMX trick playground with deliveries; not exactly what I was hoping it would be. There is the second mission with the photographer where you are basically stuck doing tricks in sequence or you won't pass the mission... Basically this is where I quit the demo. I think the fact that you can do tricks is cool, but honestly it does not feel that...

This Should NOT Focus on BMX

I think I speak for everyone when I say expectations do not match gameplay. The world design suggests a cozy atmosphere and the mail delivery implies long scenic routes. Starting the game without your bike gives the impression that there's more to do than riding but you have no jump or special abilities to incentivize it. Implementing a surprisingly fleshed out sumo minigame made me think it's a core part of the gameplay loop. Many design choices here are tricking the player into expectations that lead to...

Please add a walking mode – I couldn’t finish the tutorial

I love the art and atmosphere, but I got severe motion sickness from the BMX movement and couldn’t finish the tutorial. Even riding straight made me nauseous. A walking mode or smoother camera option would really help. I want to enjoy the game, but right now it’s physically impossible for me....
