I recall reading some SF, probably in 1985/6 in a short story there is a robot tasked with making paperclips. Eventually it goes mad and consumes all the the available metal. I have to disclose, I was given a review copy. So at the time I got sent a copy, I was testing for bugs in 2 other games, Always On stayed on my shelf, ready to launch.
