Update 1.0.5 – Bug Fixes

We’ve released a small update that fixes several issues. Please make sure you have the latest version of the game (1.0.5).

List of changes:

Added player invulnerability during certain cutscenes
Fixed an issue where the Magic Decoy could crash the game
Fixed several issues where the camera stopped following the player
Fixed an issue where the encounter with the Salamander character might not trigger

Can we have the quick save points persist after quitting the game?

I'm up to the 3rd "boss" and have gotten a mutual kill twice. I absolutely love the game, difficulty curve is spot on imo. I just wish that when you quit the game it would remember the quick save you were at in a level rather than having to repeat the entire level again. I like to chip at boss attempts due to carpal tunnel but since I have to rerun the whole level I either have to leave the game on the restart screen and minimise or just quit out and redo the level up to the checkpoint ( by which time I...

First update for Haunted Lands is here, fixing a couple of issues that could interrupt your journey through the cursed lands. Please make sure you have the latest version of the game (1.0.4).

Fixed an issue where the game could crash after loading a quick save while the CRT filter was enabled
Fixed an issue that could occur during an encounter with the Ranger character

A gorgeous tribute to Dangerous Dave in the Haunted Mansion with 3 main different class types that all play differently, plenty of secret areas, crazy gore, and a nice chunky OST.
I love this game very much, but I agree with all comments about the checkpoints being too distant and "quicksaves" being unavailable between separate sessions.

Haunted Lands is a masterpiece. It's honestly sad that it got rage voted down to 81% by people who thought the game is too hard. I know what they mean, but for me, the difficulty is the point.

I reached a point in my life where I can beat just about any game if I grind hard enough years ago, unless said game is hard in a broken/unfair way. But as hard as Haunted Lands is, at least based on the first few levels, it has no unfairness to pad the extreme difficulty. It makes Castlevania 3 look easy, which I have actually beaten with no cheats, so don't take it lightly when I say I don't know if I'll ever actually beat Haunted Lands. I'm currently struggling with the boss of the first world, which less than 10% of players have beaten, and the second world has only been beaten by 3% of players. And keep in mind, most of this player base is hardcore gamers, not random 80s kids with an NES/DOS machine.

I want to congratulate the amazing work that went into making an experience brutal enough to actually give me the thrill of questioning if I can ever actually do it, or how far I can get, WITHOUT being a broken mess. The craftsmanship here is truly incredible. I thank the team behind it deeply.

As for my recommendation: If you're a zoomer manchild who can't handle not having a checkpoint every thirty seconds, heed the negative reviews and save yourself the trouble. Also, take a shower.

But if you want your skill truly tested, even if it means you don't see the end, there are few better options than Haunted Lands.

Here's the issue, getting through the level isn't that hard, slightly tricky at times sure, but not hard. The main challenge is usually at the end, where you have a large number of enemies to deal with and/or a boss. That is where the true challenge lies, so for the love of god put a damn checkpoint before the boss and stop making me have to go through the stage again and again, having to recollect everything again, just so I can fight the boss.
I don't want to have to go through the stage a second or third time, again the stage isn't that hard, but it does take time to get through, and it gets boring real fast.

Aside from that though, it is a very well made retro inspired game harkening back to early 90s Apogee PC platformers. It can be a bit brutal at times, and it may not appeal to everyone, and I would like to see a few QOL tweaks, such as mid area checkpoints, but it's good.

Checkpoints would be nice

Fun game! But starting the level over and over is ultra punishing. Even Castlevania 1 had checkpoints. This could use a few on every level. Thanks!

Okay, so there's a mysterious locked door in the Old Mansion's Generator Room, accessed by taking out the third generator... how do you go about accessing it, because I got four mysterious batteries, yet nothing is happening.

Feedback and Suggestions After Playing Three Levels

The overall quality of the game is excellent. It successfully retains a pixel art style while incorporating modern, smooth controls. The difficulty level is fair, and the stages have various items to collect—some of which even require revisiting later in the game to obtain.
