It works perfectly well as a basic trade good and would make a tonne of sense if it were a generic term for assorted reusable metal sheets/rods/screws/bolt/nails/etc. but using it as a currency is kind of ridiculous. Not only is it heavy, it's also a poor handwave to its utility, what's a fruit farmer doing selling their produce for it? Hoping someone else comes along to trade things they need for it? Are any two loads of scrap the same? Maybe a guy needs a bunch of screws to fix his car, not a pile of alu...
