Is it possible to have a 8 or more player local mode?

As title, would be great fun to make custom maps to race along, even if they're not as good as the ones shipped in-game. I have a hankering for a volcano level!

It would be nice to change the screen resolution from in-game, so this title remains playable on larger newer displays.
