This furry game proves that indie games aren't necessarily above prizing graphics over gameplay. Sure, it's a metroidvania, but it's the driest metroidvania I've ever played, with many of the things that gate progression just being walls that glow a certain color, and you have to find the stone that glows the same color, which is always rewarded for story progression or finishing a specific quest, nothing else. It would've been better off as a linear game. There are abilities like the slide, wall climb, invincible dash, and double jump, but those first two are mostly useful only when you see a tunnel or vines to use them on. This is in contrast to Hollow Knight's progression, where abilities like the dive are still powerful in combat, even though they only need to be used on shaky floors. If you want a good metroidvania, play Hollow Knight or its sequel Silksong instead.

Sure, it's a character action game, but there's only - I counted - FOUR combo attacks in the entire game, and you start with all of them and you're taught them all in the first hour of gameplay. There's also the spin attack & its synergy with projectiles (projectile attacks without the spin are so inaccurate and do so little damage as to be insignificant), which is just the brain dead answer to any enemy in the game. Sure, it's supposed to be balanced by the energy system, but a few quick combos take the energy bar from empty to full, and eating any food item also fully restores it instantly. The best strategy I found was stocking up on dozens of the game's weakest food item, intentionally tanking a hit, then spinning to win with the projectiles, eating one of the food every time I ran out of energy, and doing it all again. At the end of the 1st chapter you'll get a projectile so strong (with the spin) that you can more or less nuke the screen whenever you feel like it. It doesn't help that most of the enemies are cannon fodder-y and not interesting to fight. Even the bosses aren't fun, they're kinda just unique normal monsters with unusually large health pools. If not for the story dialogue that plays out before and after, I could even mistake them for such. If you want a good character action game, play Hi-Fi Rush. I've heard Bayonetta & Devil May Cry are also good in that genre, but I haven't played them.

So, it's a beautiful game, peaceful music, smoothly animated, with good voice acting, and not the worst thing if you just want to switch your brain off and beat up a few dozen goblins/zombies/wolves (they're virtually interchangeable). It's also not terribly hard or long to get all the achievements in; I got all the achievements. But with the major elements like combat and exploration being iffy at best, and the story - I liked the story, but it's basic and predictable - you're better off picking another game.
