Is it just through random trial and error combining in the smelter?

So I am stuck on the second overseer. I have been for a few days. I've maxed out the gold bar for the cohorts selling them large and medium weapons. The Overseer's enchant is frost so I have been enchanting Fire, but I also tried a few frost. The overseer is also eldritch, so I have tried Drakthyl, Mythril, and Silver weapon heads with all Drakenite hafts (Tank bug leather grips) and there the Icon sits, mocking me. First off, I love the game so far, and I won't repeat the 'tutorial/help' posts, but they are valid, my questions/ frustrations are this: 1. I have 0 idea what gems do, they seem to actually degrade eldrich damage, which goes against the H menu information [when put on blades, not the rest, which I know is in the help menu] but even when put on the guard/grip/pommel it seems to do nothing. 2.
