why in menu game consume more power than in-game?

I was playing the Next Fest demo on my Steam Deck, and after about 13 minutes, a window popped up saying "Fatal error" and then the game crashed.

Spent about an hour on this--and I've played lots of other similar games. The main thing really stuck out to me is it feels just a bit too slow, especially in the beginning of the match.
