while I get lost in the library, the golden star appeared but I can't interact with it to get some direction hints

Has anybody figured out how the emotions on the home screen work? Are they random, or can you evoke an emotion to see the hidden objects? ALSO: as I am trying to go through the library, the third round of following directions doesn't have any for me to follow. Am I supposed to use a previous directional input to get to the next area, or should I be looking for another puzzle to solve?...
