I just wanted to share some updates in case you haven't been following the patch notes. The two major features that were missing at launch are now available: the in-game Music Player and Achievements! There have also been loads of smaller bug fixes, performance improvements, and other helpful quality of life tweaks throughout the last few patches, and more are on the way.

Both of the above-mentioned features will respect the progress you've already made with the game, so you can hop right in and listen to any of the Music Tracks you've already collected throughout Slumberland, and your achievements will be logged as soon as you load up your save file.

In the near future I will mostly be focused on performance optimizations and bug fixes to make sure everything is all lined up for the Switch port, but I also have some more post-launch features I am planning to introduce, so stay tuned! Thanks for reading, Sleepyheads.

Steam Deck performance

I played the demo on Steam Deck yesterday and was bummed about the performance. The game largely maintained near 60fps when capping the framerate in game and on the steam deck. But the game would constantly stutter in particular like it was trying to load assets while moving around. I've tried turning down settings in game but the stuttering is still there. Has the full version ironed out those performance issues on the deck? I loved everything except how it was running....

Finding missing items - tracking and assistance?

Besides the purple moons, how do you know what you’re missing in each area? And is there any upgrade at some point to help you find some if you missed something? Im a completionist, so its super important

Consistent Crashes

I have a repeatable crash occurring when entering the Nightlight City sewers secret entrance from Dreamswept Plains. The crash happens once I pass through the transition point and the fire hydrant comes into frame on the left-hand side.

Music Player Update (v1.0.5)

What's New

The Music Player is here! You can find it under the "Extras" heading from the Main Menu (it will appear in the Pause Menu as well, but it is disabled and can only be accessed from the Main Menu). The game will do a one-time migration on launch so that it will be sure to unlock the correct tracks based on the cumulative unlocks of tracks amongst all of your save files, so if you've already collected all of the tracks, you'll see them there in the Music Player, ready to listen to! Tracks take advantage of the endless scrolling feature of each domain's backgrounds to show off the game's parallax background art while you listen to the music. Enjoy!

Bug Fixes

Fixed an issue where after going through a screen transition, the camera might be ever-so-slightly overlapping with an adjacent camera collider, allowing it to then peek into adjacent rooms where the camera shouldn't be able to go.
Made some fixes to the core disk serialization logic that should help prevent rare issues that were causing some players to get deadlocked for several minutes while saving or loading their save file.
Fix for unexplored …? icons on the mini-map sometimes remaining in place after exploring a room.
Fixed a bug where B.O.B. wouldn't alert you to secrets when riding on your back.
The Knightmare Armor's gems will always stay within the room when knocked loose, preventing an issue that could occur if you knocked the gem loose when it was overlapping with the wall on the right side of the room.

Small Tweaks

Reduce how much candy spreads out when moons break open so that it's less annoying to pick up.
Make it slightly easier to get a very difficult to reach Blue Moon in the south-eastern part of Valley of Silence.
Move a pluckable bubble in Crystal Caverns that had become an unintentional red herring on how to cross a long gap (you're simply intended to learn how to use the Grapple Yo-Yo's different trajectories).
Place a missing tag near a Blue Moon in Dreamswept Plains that players had difficulty in figuring out how to reach, and also ensure you can reach it even if you already broke the lantern.
Give a slightly stronger hint for a secret area in Mushroom Marsh that players tended to miss.
Fixed the Giant Spore Bomb not affecting some enemies (specifically it was ultimately only one).
Fix for the icon of the game cartridge at the top of Dreamswept Plains not dynamically updating on the minimap.
Made a secret tag in the Crypt more visible.
Slight tweak to one of the Professor's special tips to be clear it's not referring to Captain Sweetbeard.
Captain Sweetbeard will now also open the gate if enough candy is in Nemo's ledger (allowing players that don't ever wake up to also open the gate).
Fix a moon in Muckroot Morass you could get more easily than intended.
Minor tweak to Eastern Sewers layout to discourage bringing machine parts the wrong way.
Make toggleable lanterns in Crystal Caverns pogo-stickable to better match player expectations.
Tweak layout to "shell puzzle" room in Crystal Caverns to prevent players using slight pogo stick bug to get into the room without a shell.
Add the Cordysect Plushie to Nemo's bedroom after it's defeated.
Make carryable veggies use the Object hitbox layer and allow Venus Clamtrap to destroy them when snapping shut. Why? Because sometimes players try to "feed" the veggies to this enemy and I think we should let it "eat" them.
Added a few pieces of candy in early Dreamswept Plains to help guide players.

Known Issues

As with the previous build, this one was mostly focused on delivering an important feature that was missing at launch, this time the Music Player. So there are still some issues outstanding. These are the most notable known issues:

There is a bug which can cause the game to get into a bad state and cause a drop in performance. If you encounter performance suddenly being noticeably worse, you can simply touch a bed, choose Save and Quit, and relaunch. You won't lose any progress and that should fix the issue. I now have a better sense of how and why this is happening, but it will take more work to get it solved.
Traversal stutters, which were improved in 1.0.3, still remain. As with before, you typically won't notice these, but on a Steam Deck or in other scenarios they become more noticeable. These will get fixed as we focus more on performance optimizations necessary for the Switch port.
Bon-Bon dialogue reads as if her house is advanced to the next step after you donate candy, even though it won't actually advance until you leave and come back.
Bon-Bon's secret dialogue about her amulet is slightly incorrect/out of date in some scenarios.

Planned Work

Expect the next patch to put the focus back on bug fixing and performance updates as

Fix the major bug or bugs which are causing the game to get into a bad state.
Improve general performance in some domains that are not as performant.
Significantly reduce traversal stutter.

The Achievements Update!

New Features

Achievements are here! There are 47 achievements (8 of which are hidden) for players to unlock. If you've already been playing the game, or have even finished, you can still unlock achievements by simply loading your save slot. As soon as you load a save slot in, it will get your achievements and stats up to date based on the information that was already being tracked in your save files.
There are a couple of achievements that we were not tracking data properly for, so these won't unlock automatically: Talk to Wilfred with the Frog PJs on, Defeat 50 enemies at Max Rank, and Defeat an Enemy with a Bubbled Projectile. All 44 other achievements should unlock automatically if you had already met the criteria for them.
The game now tracks how many of each enemy you've defeated, and at which ranks. This work was necessary for some of the achievements that were added thanks to player suggestions, but will also be essential for an upcoming Bestiary feature.

Bug Fixes

Fixed a bug in how we count map explore percentage. We were overcounting in the player's favor (specifically, unmappable rooms would count towards percentage). It's unlikely, but perhaps possible, that you had a 100% save which might now be at about 99% or so if there is a room you somehow avoided while collecting everything.

Typos and Other Small Tweaks

Fixed enemies in the Cordysect Queen boss fight so that they don't dynamically adjust rank or emit death bullets at max rank like standard enemies do.
Fixed some more typos in some of Panda Tuxpin's stories.
Made it impossible to get up to the Cliffside Summit using Frog PJs.

Known Issues

I was almost entirely focused on achievements for this build, so existing issues still remain, and I have a better sense of what's happening with some of the issues players have brought to my attention:

While playing extensively to test Achievements, I started to get a better sense of how and why this is happening, but it will take more work to get it solved.
Traversal stutters which were improved in 1.0.3 still remain. As with before, you typically won't notice these, but on a Steam Deck or in other scenarios they become more noticeable. These will get fixed as we focus more on performance optimizations necessary for the Switch port.
Some players are reporting an issue with the game getting the permissions needed for the save files, which results in the game hanging for some time before it corrects itself. This one is very difficult to replicate on my hardware, so if you're seeing this issue, please report it in the Discord server or Steam community forums!
Bon-Bon dialogue reads as if her house is advanced to the next step after you donate candy, even though it won't actually advance until you leave and come back.
Bon-Bon's secret dialogue about her amulet is slightly incorrect/out of date in some scenarios.
The Knightmare Armor boss can be soft-locked if one of its gems gets released into a wall.
The …? minimap icon sometimes remains in place after exploring a room and renders on top of the room.
Sometimes when going through a camera transition, the camera will clip through a camera collider and peek into an adjacent screen. This is similar to the bug that was fixed in this patch, but importantly the camera collider is actually there, so Nemo can't escape and if the camera comes back fully into the room that it should be in, it won't escape again.

Planned Work

Next up, I'll be tackling the in-game music player. As with the Achievements, I'll probably focus solely on that to get it done quickly, and once shipped, I'll turn my attention back to the hunting down these more persistent issues that have continued to pop up.

Such a lovely and charming game. It has it's flaws, but I really enjoyed my time with it. Art and music are outstanding, story is really charming, and the map is a lot of fun to explore. I also think there's a lot of interesting mechanics at play, I wasn't sure how I'd use the ranking and hp system but I really think it helps the game shine. Though for as much as I praise I do have quite some complaints. I think bosses have far too much waiting time. Since you are learning the patterns I feel like so often I'm just waiting for minutes just to get a glance at what is next, only to die since I'm unfamiliar. A minor complaint is how the tracking of collectables are handled, some areas have collectables only accessible from another which begs the question of why they wouldn't be counted for the other. And while you are given a buddy to help find them, it isn't super reliable due to when it actually activates. I had a couple times I was passing it and wasn't notified unless I was extremely close. Though I will say the land itself has a lot of hints if you keep your eye out. Also I have to say it can be buggy, I had it crash about 6 times over my playthrough, and some areas have some odd collision. This is mostly an issue towards the end of the game, where I clipped out of bounds looking for collectables. But for the size of the world and what it goes for I am willing to forgive some of it's shortcomings. Even just wandering the world looking for collectables I never was truly bored. I kickstarted this back in 2022 and it honestly well surpassed my expectations.

This game is frustratingly hard, which is fine. ] can deal with that.
What I cant deal with is inconsistent game mechanics that will stump your progress by 90%.
It's always the same thing with Metroidvanias... the friggin' hook/tether/swing mechanic where you have to shoot hoops and swing from them.
If the mechanic isn't well balanced, you can find yourself falling thousands of times on the same damn ring,
I'm done with this game.

Amazing Adition to the Nemo franchize. I needed a pallet cleanser game that was fun to play and this one was perfection. Absolutely loved it ^^
