The Kakkoi’s Laundromat update for Gensokyo Odyssey is now live!

"Kakkoi went and gambled all her money on blackjack. Idiot. What better way to get her money back than to "take back" what's rightfully hers, in the form of a daring robbery? Or two? Or ten? Or as many as it takes to get it all back? With a little style, a little cunning, and a lot of adrenaline, Kakkoi... wait, if people see her robbing again they might remember her, and the police most certainly will if she gets caught! That's right, we're gonna let Okuu, Kakkoi's trusty right-hand and muscle, do the robbing. After all, she likes blowing people up.But with all that new hard-earned moola, you can't just go around town with bags of cash! Luckily, Kakkoi has the perfect solution: money laundering! Clean that money through laundry, set up a few front businesses, and voila - clean, legitimate money. Upgrade Okuu's skills by coaching her through heists, persuade other characters and their businesses to join you via charisma or blackmail, pimp out your 14 dollar broke ass apartment, and watch your fortune grow!"

Development on this side-game technically started a long while ago, but I personally associate most of its real development with the months I spent recovering from surgery. I only really started ramping things up during that recovery period, and two months essentially bedridden will do that to you.

So now, with the Laundromat finally released and my recovery nearly complete, it feels pretty neat to see both of those things come full circle at the same time.

Alongside the Laundromat itself, this update also includes several improvements to the base game:

• The game’s file size is now smaller than before, even with the Laundromat added.

• Future updates will continue optimizing the game size even further.

• A new save system has been added, which is much simpler and a major improvement over the old one.

• Because of how much changed, saves from the old system cannot be transferred over.

• A long-standing memory leak that has plagued the game has been fixed.

• Gensokyo Odyssey can now appear as your Discord activity while you play.

• More animations have been added throughout the base game.

The Kakkoi’s Laundromat soundtrack will release on Steam, Bandcamp, and YouTube on June 5, with a Spotify release coming later.

In addition to There are also a few new “general” songs missing from this initial version. Rather than rush them out in a suboptimal state, we decided the best option was to add them to the game alongside the soundtrack release next week, since the Laundromat’s structure makes that a very natural time to include them. There may also be a few small Laundromat updates over the next few days as we smooth things out, make some minor adjustments, and give everything a little extra polish.

Russian and Italian localizations of the Laundromat are also planned for the future.

To commemorate the release of Kakkoi’s Laundromat, we’ve put Gensokyo Odyssey on sale for the first time ever. Even with the addition of the Laundromat, the game is currently the cheapest it has ever been, so now is a great time to pick it up or recommend it to a friend.

Today is April 16, the original release date of Gensokyo Odyssey. At the exact hour this announcement goes live, the game will have released two years ago.

Last time I made an announcement was back in November, where I mentioned updates with the game and knee surgery. Now, through the surgery and months of hard work, it's my pleasure to commemorate this anniversary by formally announcing Kakkoi's Laundromat, and it's release date!

This update is a very different kind of experience from the base game, while still retaining the spirit of Gensokyo Odyssey, and I think it really bumps the game up another tier and adds a lot of what people like and wanted.

Regarding the price and status of Kakkoi's Laundromat, we went back and forth on this quite a bit. Whether Kakkoi's Laundromat should be paid DLC; what price would reflect the effort put into it; and how to keep things affordable without underselling the base game or the Laundromat itself. In the end, we decided to bundle Laundromat and it's value into the base game rather than sell it separately.

If you already own the game, you get the full update for free. This price change only affects new buyers going forward.

Given the scope of Laundromat, which rivals the scale of the base game, a price point of ~$10.99 would be easy to justify. But keeping things affordable has always been important to us, and $6.99 felt like a fair compromise.

We'll also be running a launch discount during release week. However, due to Steam's 30-day restriction on discounts after a price change, the new price will go into effect next Saturday, April 25. If you've been on the fence about picking up the game, now is a great time to grab it at the current price.

While the Laundromat will be part of the base game, there will be a separate Steam page for the Laundromat's Soundtrack. As with the base game's soundtrack, this one is quite nice and in many ways is even better than the base game OST! In fact, the main theme of Kakkoi's Laundromat (which I've kept secret!!) is the largest project file in all of Gensokyo Odyssey!

We've also added nice updates to the base game, like an improved save system, motions, performance fixes, and even a bit of new dialogue! Additionally, we've used advanced file compression methods and optimization for each asset ingame meticulously, to the point where even including the new Laundromat content, the file size of the game will be much smaller with no visual changes!
