I'm having a blast with the game, but my Goalie just kicking the ball when it gets control is killing me. I have lost more games that way than any other way. Am I doing something wrong or is this bad AI?

this game feels like banging two action figures together constantly, the AI is brutal and the game annoyingly switches characters randomly, ruining my momentum. Is there a mecanic, or something in the controls that i missed? i feel like beating the level 3 AI is impossible lol...
