This game is nonsense. The mansion, the enemies, the protagonist herself (Caroline), the story, none of it makes any logical sense. The criticisms of the horrifying voice acting, and combat, I agree. Where my agreement diverges is on the puzzles and atmosphere. It’s clear Tormented Souls abandoned realism, logic and story telling to achieve the vibe it was going for. And, it nailed it.
To get the combat out of the way first, It’s terrible. I hate to use this term, but the combat is clunky and bare-bones. Your options in combat are two melee attacks, two ranged weapons and a backwards dodge. That’s it. Think of the Resident Evil 2 remake combat but jank. You shoot the “zombie” ‘till it falls over. Then, you run up to the zombie and “stab” it a couple times until it dies. For Tormented Souls, there is a delay when preforming any of these actions. Additionally, your melee weapon doesn’t magically appear in your hands like the marketing video shows. Instead, you have to open your inventory and switch weapons from there. On to the backwards dodge, I first thought it was not safe from the jank either. I thought it nearly useless, because dodging causes your character to drop her aim. In turn, the enemy is on you again before you can ready your weapon to fight back. You’re better off turning around and running to create distance. However, I have found niche uses for it as I progressed through the growingly deadly mansion.
Next, the puzzles are great, but they get really difficult to figure out towards the end of the game. There is no way in hell I was ever going to figure out that grandfather clock puzzle and that gramophone/rhythm puzzle without a walkthrough.
Even after all of that, I still recommend Tormented Souls. There is a sincere vibe in game. Like, the game knows it’s horror and is trying to give you what you paid for: Immersion, tension and scares. This game is a joy to play late at night. For example, it was midnight. I’m sitting in my chair with my small dog sleeping in my lap. The lights are off. I’m rummaging through all the text files and clues in the game looking for solutions to my puzzles. My consciousness drifts deeper into the game as I progress. I get to this valve puzzle in a generator room. With a few turns of valves the puzzle is completed. I walk out the door to carry on and find an enemy that wasn’t there before. He makes a break for me in his wheelchair that’s screaming for some WD-40. Now, as I said, the combat is terrible and jank. Being aware of this, I panic. My dog is looking up at me confused. The enemy slashes me with his 16 inch long knife fingers. I run back through the door I came from and open my inventory to heal. My character has taken damage and her heart is beating loud and fast. This sound tips my dog’s anxiety over. He freaks out. Running throughout the house barking as loudly as possible. My wife wakes up and jumps out of bed to investigate the commotion. Consequently, I have to bust out the headphones for Tormented Souls, and the game is even better with them.
I should also note that the game does have bugs, but nothing that infuriated me or broke the game. I enjoyed this game and am likely to come back to it again for the 100%.

Would recommend to all Resident Evil 1 Remake fans out there.

These controls beyond 2005 are not admisible. Combat is one of the worst I've ever seen too. Artificial way of adding difficulty by just making it awkward and clunky
