Early Access Review
A thoroughly enjoyable villain experience with an abundance of minions, enemies, spells, builds, and strategies.

One of the few games that has compelled me to write a review. Akane has tight controls, striking pixel art graphics, and a Neo-Tokyo cyberpunk setting.

The gameplay is that of an endless arcade slasher, with gear progression and sporadic boss fights thrown in. Virtually all characters, including the boss and yourself, can be one-shot, which leads to brief and intense skill-based fights that often come down to timing, reflexes, and positioning. If you have enjoyed Ubermosh, Ruiner, or Hotline Miami, you will almost certainly like Akane.

On a technical note, the game uses the Unity engine and runs with an unlocked framerate. Ultrawide support (tested @ 3040x1080) is partially supported – gameplay is confined to 1920x1080 but HUD elements can extend beyond this, depending on resolution and aspect ratio. No key rebinding at the time of writing, apparently planned for a future patch.

For the price, $2.99, this game is a steal – doubly so if you are a fan of arcade games or cyberpunk settings.
