Seems like the devs finally caved in to the demand for their game to be fun rather than a chore to play.

Game drops a difficulty wall on you right at the beginning instead of easing you in like Slay the Spire to crank up difficulty once you've learned how to play. Probably gets better once you've dedicated enough of your life learning how to climb that wall, but to me, it just isn't a rewarding enough experience to lure me into doing that.
