got ported to UE5 from unity. game runs awfully now no matter what system you throw it at. idk why they thought the "upgrade" from an engine that works to one known to run bad was a good idea, let alone for a VR title

Early Access Review
give it a shot but dont expect much if youre coming from previous skate games. feels more like a brand new ip that would claim "inspired by skate" rather than something from the ip. also no linux support due to strict kernel anticheat so its an immediate pass if youre a linux or steam deck user, if youre on windows try it since its free but i would reccommend the earlier skate games over it at least in its current state

as an avid TROMBONER, i can say this version feels just as great as the original and controls really well, the hand movements feel so natural that anyone can pick this up and play. it's like the original but even more chaotic thanks to the fact you're literally holding the thing and the live audience sure lets you know how well you're doing. also there's a cat trombone. meow

it'd be generous to call the experience half-baked
if you're a payday fan you'll probably get 20 minutes of enjoyment out of this until poor design decisions and server issues bleed into your session, and you'll be hardpressed not to use any community mod fixes which genuinely make the experience that much better

unless some severe changes are made, do yourself a favor and get payday 2 instead

while bonelab feels more like an addon for boneworks i still think it has some qualities that make it a decent game, sure it's not a direct continuation of boneworks/ford's story which i was also upset about like many others at first but tbh you learn to forgive it a bit for that the more you get into it for trying its own thing in the boneworks/SLZ universe. there's some improvements to the boneworks formula such as nicer graphics, some better mechanics (for example climbing isn't an absolute chore now) and better mod support although a bit dry at the moment, the game definitely has it's share of issues but tbf so did boneworks. i would still agree that boneworks is the objectively better game but i feel like people are a little too harsh on bonelab

TL;DR if you've not played boneworks, play that instead but if you're a fan of the series it doesn't hurt to give this one a shot although i would say wait for a sale because i think the standard price is a little too much for what you're getting

EDIT: ubisoft have recently confirmed that if your ubisoft account goes inactive for a while, your account along with all games tied to it even if they were bought from steam WILL BE DELETED. DO NOT BUY THIS RELEASE. ubisoft never learns, and if there's any game they SHOULD'VE learned from it's this game. old review is as follows:

i really wish i could post a review as mixed, because this game is GREAT yet ubisoft being ubisoft managed to screw it up royally. coming from a fan of the series this review will be long so strap yourself in

this game now only coming to steam after being locked to their launcher and epic (why only epic at launch? great start to lock a game that went missing for years!) for about a year is obvious double-dipping and in classic ubisoft fashion what you're buying here is a glorified shortcut to ubisoft connect which is where your game is actually being activated (another good start! might i remind you this game went missing for years?) i could go on about how jank ubisoft connect is, i had to accept about 15 UAC prompts and the damn thing still wouldn't start, but i think everyone knows about the jank already so that part explains itself. they also put denuvo drm on the game, seriously? this game had gone missing for YEARS and not only are you locking purchases to certain platforms, you're also putting ♥♥♥♥♥♥ anti-tamper on the game? did you not learn from before?
about the game itself though, the game is fantastic but the port leaves a lot to be desired. it almost feels like ubisoft didn't even test the game, because when you play with a controller the game automatically chooses the keyboard with mouse option in steam. thankfully you can open the steam overlay, go to controller configuration and change this to gamepad which will fix the issue, but for something that takes literally 10 seconds to fix on the consumer's end it shows how much ubisoft didn't care. i was surprised that the game worked pretty much flawlessly on the steam deck out of the box (same controller issue tho, can be fixed by pressing the steam button and going to the game's controller settings) although there is no steam cloud feature so if you're like me and want to play the game on the go, have fun manually transferring your save between two machines. there is also no steam achievements, they're all on ubisoft connect which is great if you use that but since you're reading this on steam chances are you only use it for games you bought on steam like me, so the fun of going for achievements to show on your profile isn't there which sucks.
i've seen people say the performance has been bad for them, i haven't ran into any obvious performance issues on both my PC and my steam deck, both of which managed to stay at the screen's refresh rate consistently but what i did experience was some graphical glitches (specifically one that i encountered on both steam deck and my PC is by going into wallace's mystery shop, leaving and then entering again will show a very obvious delay in the door opening animation that isn't there the first time you enter) and weird audio mixing, the game is very quiet seemingly for no reason even with the in-game audio sliders maxed out. also it might be placebo but it feels like the enemy ai is worse? i've had multiple cases now of enemies getting stuck or trying to follow the player in a really weird way that i could've sworn didn't happen in the original.

TL;DR: don't get me wrong i'm happy this game is more accessible to the masses now and i do hope that these major issues are ironed out (denuvo being removed would also be nice) rather than this being put on steam as a cashgrab to be left and forgotten, this being ubisoft though i wouldn't be surprised if that's what will happen. if you want to play this game the way it was intended without any of ubisoft's crapware and denuvo drm ruining your performance, just play the PS3/360 version of this game instead, it's quite literally the same game and there are plenty of guides out there that will show you how to set these versions up on your PC with relative ease.
