Pure platforming bliss. I haven't played a platformer in so long where I had this level of confidence in the controls. Everything is super responsive and feels very responsive. Even if you think visually this game might not be your thing, you owe it to yourself to play it from the excellent game-feel alone.

An odd comparison but apart from the Mario anlaogue, if you've liked any of the inhouse-IP Inti-Creates has put out in the last decade, Act 2 is a wonder to behold.

Story-wise, I thought from the store page I knew where this was going, and I was pleasantly surprised, as an asexual person to see some genuinely good representation here. I didn't expect it but I'm so glad the story went where it did.

This is such a difficult game to recommend. There are like a million caveats to the recommendation I'm giving so here are some of the highlights.

The majority of the game just does not have confidence in its world and premise mechanically such that you spend most of the story with the game threatening to do something interesting.

Then when you've more or less resigned yourself to this being a basic, mechanically hollow rune factory game with a coat of Square RPG paint on it, you start to unlock the capstone abilities of one or two jobs, the game starts to make interesting use of the FEAR enemies, and even the extremely sub-par well dungeon starts to fit in with the rest of the game.

The last few chapters show a brief glimpse at a great game that this could have been, but wasn't. I suppose it'll be interesting to play if it ever gets a sequel, spiritual or otherwise.

Timelie is short and focused. You're not going to find much in the way of story, but what's there keeps the creepy atmosphere that compliments the mechanics nicely.

And my god that last chapter...

I am ashamed of how long I slept on this game. It's a real hidden gem. The Secret of Mana comparisons are apt, to a degree, but don't really do the game justice. While there is a demo, it doesn't really give a good sense for what you're in for.

Combat is really satisfying, the dungeons are a great mix of puzzles, and combat and basically everything is invisibly tutorialized, you'll never be in grave danger while you learn a new enemy or puzzle solution. Also no grinding, which I appreciate.

Now you can die before you even create your character; huge improvement over DkS. 11/10
