it's your amazing ♥♥♥♥♥♥ CRPG from your youth, except it's AAA quality

This is gonna be a no for me. In terms of content, the number of civs you can play with the base game is ridiculously low, especially considering how many civ V had. The map generator never really amazed me, not many options to chose from. The barbarians make the northern and southern parts of the map twice harder. The city states have barely any personality or history.
The AI is still bad (so they have loads of cheats to help) which is not... good AI
And even the starting speech by Sean Bean is wrong... from the great beasts of the stone Age (aka mammoth hunting time) to man's first upright steps... COME ON ! the chronology here :(
And the worst is that going back to Civ 5 is hard because the UI changed so much, and now I'm unfamiliar with the game mechanics...

Edit: got gathering storm, and it alongside all the updates, QOL and others, I've changed my mind, it is an entertaining game.

Great Solo player experience and definitely worth the pickup at -80% right now.
The story is absolutely brutal and will hold you for the entire game. The 3rd person gameplay is actually good thanks to terrain interaction

The story will remind you of Apocalypse now. So if you liked the movie, get this game.

Multiplayer was hella bad when I bought this game though.
