Update: Follow this guide to get the game running on SteamOS/Linux: https://v1.steam.hlxgame.cc/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3697492100

So! This release is not great. For me, I own it and the other two classic RE games just to own them on Steam. If that's what you want, stop reading this review and just buy them for the library entries.

But for a game to actually play? You're in for a bit of a mess without installing mods - and by installing mods, I mean deleting everything Steam downloads and dragging over the installation of a better version of RE1.

Out of 1, 2 and 3 this is the second best port. Controls almost work perfectly out of the box... if you're willing to use only the joystick to move, anyway. I've got a little tip for classic RE games: Using the joystick sucks. Tank controls work best with a DPad, and the Xinput implementation here doesn't want to let you use the Dpad in bindings.

Getting past that, it's the classic RE1 PC port experience. The game runs a little fast by default - not to the extent of an unpatched install of RE1PC, but this is still a game that wants to run as fast as your CPU will let it.

And then you gotta look at it. This isn't really the fault of this port, these are pre-rendered backgrounds in a game that came out a year and a half or so in the PS1's life; they're low res 320x200 images and they're highly compressed. At modern resolutions you're gonna be seeing compression block artifacts as big as your hand. For someone who grew up with these games, I can look past it, but for someone who has never even smelled an RE game older than 4 it will probably be super distracting.

But - it's still the PC port, and that means you have a couple of cool features. Beating the game will get you some unlockable machine guns which no other version of RE1 has. You can skip door loading scenes, and the intro is uncut and in full color. Jill has unlimited saves on her first playthrough and Chris...

Well, Chris is still hardmode.

Also, weird DRM, strange choice for games that were already re-released on GOG and for this one in particular which is 30 years old.

But I love Resident Evil. I want Capcom to know I still love these old games to death and will crawl through broken glass to play them. But I can't recommend purchasing them unless you've got the same classic RE brainrot. There are better ways to play this classic game.

Update: Follow this guide to get RE2 running under SteamOS/Linux: https://v1.steam.hlxgame.cc/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3697576293

Does not launch on Linux, the launcher will throw an error when trying to start either Claire or Leon's game and it needs to do whatever weird registry step it asks about. And if this is the same level of quality as the RE3 port, then there's a lot more issues inside the actual games.

Also has weird DRM. Huge bummer.

This breaks my heart, but I cannot recommend this in it's current state.

I am a MASSIVE classic RE fan and I've been playing these games in all their forms, including the original PC ports. Yes, even the extremely scuffed Virgin Media RE1 PC port

This might be the worst showing yet.

Let's start from the top:

- Weird DRM
- States it supports controllers, partially. Very partially. No default bindings for Xinput devices and assigning controls seems to be impossible as it's constantly detecting a HAT input with my Xbox SX controller. Keyboard controls are the classic RE PC port controls we all know and 'love'
- Audio quality is GARBAGE. Somehow, some of the zombie noises are the most compressed they've ever been, and all effect audio seems to have hard bias towards the right channel. Music sounds alright though.
- Switching to Japanese (dropdown in the launcher for this port) does not give you Sourcenext assets, leading to the next point...
- FMV quality is terrible. The pre-rendered videos all exist in much higher quality, from the Gamecube port to the Sourcenext ports, so why on earth are we dealing with Sub-PS1 levels of quality here?

At least RE3 launches on Linux. RE1 and 2 can't get past whatever registry step they're trying to complete.

If you need to play this on PC, look into the GoG ports, you can at least get the REBirth patches installed there. Unsure if that will work here, especially with the weird ♥♥♥♥♥♥' DRM.

Here's to hoping Capcom puts some work into these, as these are classic games that deserve a proper release on Steam. But if there's no movement in two weeks I'm getting my money back.

I really wish I could recommend this. On it's face it's got a way better visual style than Skylines 1. The changes to the engine and the increased limits should have been a slam dunk!

We're now a year and a half out from it's release and we still don't have asset importing. The biggest limit to this game, much like CS1, is the lack of built-in assets, making your cities look extremely similar. Even after the asset packs that have been released, it's underwhelming. The difference here is Colossal Order realized that a lack of assets was an issue with CS1 and had robust mod tools available on day one. Plus, you know, the game wasn't full price.

Also it still runs poorly and even the most overpowered rig will begin to lag long before you hit 100k residents, much less anything larger.

I've uninstalled and won't be returning until we have custom assets at a minimum. I can't believe at this point it's an "If" we have custom assets, and not when. Colossal Order, what happened?

A text-based roguelike with some of the best production values I've ever seen for such a game. Come for the fun colorscheme and weird name, stay for the amazing worldbuilding and snapjaws.

Console port that runs very well. Has minimal graphical options in game at this time (AA, shadows and AF, with AA and shadows being an on/off thing). Controls are customizable, both keyboard and controller bindings. Pretty agressive LODing, but this was originally a PS3/360 title. Has splitscreen support built in.

If you're a fan of arcade shooters with a lot of unlockable weaponry, give this a look. Sci-Fi B-Movie appreciation also a plus.

Survival mode: Check.

Cataclysmic Meteor Showers: Check.

Have all manufacturing wiped out within 5 minutes of the game: Check.

Reactors run out of fuel. Run out of energy. Slowly drift into the infinite abyss of space.

Buy this game.
