Long review so let me just hit some main points real quick:

PROS:
- Vibrant levels
- Simple controls
- Funny story

CONS:
- Bad VR implementation
- Lackluster combat
- Terrible navigation/camera system

Let me start by saying that I didn't HATE Trover Saves the Universe, It's a really good time-waster game that can entertain for around 4 or so hours.

That being said, the game does not feel like it was intended to be a 4hr time-waster. It's designed and priced like a 4hr comedy extravaganza, which it isn't. It's not that it's unfunny, but the comedy it does have is formulaic, especially if you're familiar with Rick and Morty, with reference to the interdemensional cable episodes in particular.

The gameplay is really where this game falls short. The game requires you to control Trover who explores the environment while the player remains in one set position. The player can warp to set points within each level and can also raise and lower their height (thus raising and lowering the camera). The issue with this system is that the player becomes disconnected from the character they are actually controlling. It's like the camera systems from the old resident evil games, but instead of being cinematic, the cameras are placed in the most boring possible locations. The whole benefit of a VR game is environmental exploration, but since the player has zero ways to explore the environment themselves, I almost immediately forgot I was playing a VR game, and I can only imagine any of the mild benefits you get in VR are lost if you play on a monitor.

A solution to these problems? Ditch VR since the implementation is terrible, make this game a third-person exploration game, and give Trover access to the one or two "powers" that the player character has. Combat will still be lackluster but at least it will be ENGAGING rather than a chore. Exploration won't feel so ironically flat, and the player will feel much more connected to the world, meaning the comedy (hopefully) won't fall flat.

A comparison to another VR game in this same comedic vein is Virtual Rickality. Virtual Rickality actually connected the player to the world through environmental interaction, and focused the jokes and story around the player, just like every other video game that has ever existed. Were there huge levels for the player to explore? No, there didn't need to be, because the sense of exploration and discovery that Virtual Rickality contained within a virtual garage more than made up for the lack of level variety. That is an example of a 4hr time-waster that is actually engaging and funny.

Trover Saves the Universe would have been a great game if Justin Roiland would have dropped his fixation on VR and instead just try to make a good game that connects with the player. I'm sure this game would be hilarious to Trover, since the story and jokes are about him rather than the player character, who in a narrative sense might as well not exist.

Accounting+ was funny. Now imagine if you had to watch yourself play it.

For a free game that takes less than an hour to play, This game is worth your time if you enjoy atmospheric storytelling games. It has good art direction, and the story paces itself very well.

My one con, is that if you've played games like this before, then you'll probably be able to figure out the ending about 30 minutes before the game "tells" you. We really need more variety in storytelling with these types of games.

Play this game to have a nice relaxing 45 minutes, not for a gripping story.

After playing Gunpoint (and loving it btw) I have been hyped for Ronin.

Unfortunately, I didn't think the turn-based nature of the game would be as much of a turn off as it was. The game does not play fluidly, part of which comes from poor ui and bad controls. The game is actually too simple for it's own good, which hurts the gameplay in the end. There are games with light gameplay that can be tons of fun, this game is not one of them

All these reviews talking about the story are correct, it's funny and clever. The game itself takes a simple approach to the clicker genre.

That being said, anyone who buys a clicker game for the story are going to be in for a long wait. This game drags a short story out over the length of a AAA title. Sure, it's funny for the first 30 minutes or so, but when you have to play for an hour to get to a single line of dialogue, you get tired of it quickly.

I have a K.D of 0.27 and I have had the time of my life.

7.5/10 until they fix their awful optimization and the game hits full release.

I can say in all seriousnes, this is what I wanted DayZ to be. This game has it's priorities straight. No features that are put in the game feel broken or edgy. It plays smoothly and with very little lag. Does it LOOK like the zillions of block oriented zombie survival games that are on the market? Yes. Does it PLAY like the zillions of block oriented zombie survival games that are on the market? Heck no. This game is tons of fun, dont let its looks fool you.
