to preface before I get into it, it’s not just a cool mod

it’s kind of insane how good it is

first off playing as a Combine cop instead of the usual resistance hero already feels weird in a good way. you’re not the scrappy underdog this time. you’re the one people are hiding from. and somehow it doesn’t feel edgy for the sake of it. it actually works. the game leans into it and makes you question stuff without beating you over the head about it

the gunfights feel proper. like actual Half‑Life fights. not the floaty fan project kind. I caught myself doing the old quicksave dance before pushing into rooms because some encounters will absolutely wreck you if you’re careless. and the AI can be nasty in tight spaces

there are a couple moments I genuinely just stopped and went “wait what” in the best way. didn’t expect that from a free project. no spoilers but if you know the Valve tone — that mix of quiet dread and sudden chaos — it nails that feeling more than I thought possible

also the atmosphere is ridiculously strong. cold, bleak, lonely in places. it has that slightly oppressive Half‑Life 2 mood but twisted. walking through certain areas just felt… wrong. in a good way. like the world’s falling apart and you’re on the wrong side of it

and somehow it doesn’t feel like it’s copying Valve. it feels like it understands Valve. that’s the difference. it respects the source material but still does its own thing. that’s hard to pull off and they actually did it

as someone who’s replayed Half-Life 2 more times than I can count, I didn’t expect a mod to hit that same part of my brain. but it did.

if you’re a long time Valve fan and you skipped this because “it’s just a mod” don’t. seriously. I finished it and just sat there for a minute like

yeah, that was something special
