The game itself is enjoyable when you can play it. I bought the game after having it on my wishlist for years and hearing streamers highly recommend it but after it finished installing i went to boot it up and was met with instant crashes. I did all the regular things like verifying the files and had to go search online where i tried things like starting in windowed, deleting a file, etc.., until i finally found out the game doesnt run if you have too many cores in your CPU. To fix that you need to go into cmd and limit your cores while playing and then go back in and fix it when you finish playing. I think this is a ridiculous issue for a game to have and it should say that before you purchase it if the dev doesn't intend to fix it.

I ended up coming up with my own solution once i read that and played it via steamdeck which isn't optimal but its playable. That being said I recommend this game if you have a computer with less than 12 cores, if you have more than 12 cores I wouldn't waste your money unless you want to deal with limiting cpu cores for a 2h experience.

Now that the game is at the end of its life cycle i figured i should update my review. Sadly i still wouldn't recommend people get into this game even though ive spent thousands of hours on it. The game is at its end and if you didn't get into it by now you've most likely missed the best period the game will have. Most the people I know that have playtime like mine only played this much due to being in clubs and developing friendships, not the game being that good.

Temtem is a fun monster catching/collecting game that struggles to be an MMO. The game had so much potential but crema failed to listen to the audience for a very long portion of the development. After a long bumpy road 1.8 is finally here and its a great update that fixes many things and makes the game worth playing again for the players who wanted to finish up their collections since it came with boosted luma/umbra odds. The downside to this is most of the hardcore playerbase will finish their lumapedia or get the things they want and be done within 4-6 months. This wouldn't be the biggest issue but the main PVE end-game activities like mythical lairs or digilairs require you to have multiple people to play them which will only get more difficult as the game dies.

For the PVP side of the game, ladder is absolutely atrocious. When 1.8 hit they hard reset everyones MMR which is fine but since theres less than 20 players at any given time ranks end up being meaningless and you can be a bronze yet fight the #1 player on ladder. This will only get worse as the playerbase dies and results in the losing players feeling like theres no point in trying. Theres no reason new players should be playing the top 10 temtem players in the world on a regular basis but they're the only ones that still queue ladder regularly.

I feel like the final blunder Crema made in my eyes was when they decided to do Temtem: Swarm. Ideally at 1.8 we would've gotten a road map with 2 new islands and 1 dropping each 6 months and then temtem 2 a year after the 2nd island drops. Unfortunately thats impossible as Crema has stated that they can't add more temtems to the game due to the way the game is coded. The money put towards swarm also couldve been spent other ways like getting a big streamer or multiple streamers to do a nuzlocke or play the game in front of a large audience. I don't think I ever saw an ad for temtem and had only heard about it from the kickstarter so i kept an eye on it till it released in EA.

All in all i hope temtem was a great learning experience for crema and if they decide to make a temtem 2 they take the time to figure out what the people want and listen to them from the start. A ton of people expected this game to be a lot more of an MMO and they ended up catering to the people who run the story 1 time and never play again for a majority of the games lifespan which in turn hurt their hardcore playerbase.
