Awesome game, and glad to see it moved to Steam with cross-save functionality. You can always start with the F2P version (New Light). This version already has an enormous amount of content.

Now with Shadowkeep an independent era will start, I am excited! And I recommend this game to anyone who loves to play looter shooters.
