I got this game in the evening, intending to maybe spend an hour playing before bed. Played six hours straight.
Play is very easy. Story is simple, easy to pick up and put down as needed. Farming and shop mechanics are easy and fun.
Overall good game. Fun and addictive.

It does work on Steam Deck for those wondering, it just takes a bit of figuring out which button corresponds to which key. (Right click is both triggers - that one took me forever).

I would honestly usually give up on a game that doesn't have proper controller compatibility in annoyance, but u was having a lot of fun and really didn't notice. So, so far so good.

Am hoping for controller set up and proper deck compatibility in the future though!

Fair warning: This game is super addictive. It doesn't take very long to get the acheivements to start rolling in, so if you're a completionist, you might find yourself playing for a few hours steady.

If you're going into this expecting your typical open-world, turn-based combat system type game you know the Dragon Quest series to be, you might find yourself disappointed. That said, if you go in with an open mind, you'll probably find things you like about it.

At first, I was a littl eunsure of the gameplay. I'm all about hack and slash combat, so I welcomed that change, but this game takes away that open world feel and only lets you go to and fight in certain locations. It's not my favourite part of the game, but I can live with it.

What I really like is the diversity of characters, mixing new and likeable characters with some favourites from older games (Alena and Kiryl anyone?). I like their different skills and the quick changeovers in battle lets you play around with their skills and spells at leisure.

All in all, I welcome most changes (the battle system is phenomenal) but I miss being able to heal at will (those healstones are silly - give me some spells!) and I miss my open world. But I do recommend it to fans of the series willing to embrace a new style of gameplay.

By far my favourite FF game, and one of the best in the series.

This version got a little facelift - the sprites look very different and the character designs have a few slight alterations, so if you're a purist for the original, you may not like this bit. But if you're willing to overlook the cosmetic change, you're in for a rather enjoyable experience.

Some item and spell names have been changed, presumably to fit in better with the rest of the series, so it's a bit tough to het a handle on it in the beginning. The script's also been rewritten with less dunious translations so it does read and follow a bit better, but personally, I miss some of the better mistranslations.
