Like every game to ever exist, players complain about matchmaking whenever they lose and think they're in games with people that are too good. Unlike other games though, Crytek gave in to those complaints and tightened the skill based matchmaking to the point that high elo players get empty or nearly empty lobbies every game.

So yeah, don't buy this game. If you get very good at it, it'll become unplayable unless you enjoy empty games.

First off, the most annoying thing about it... This game launches in desktop and you have to go in to the settings and enable VR then relaunch the game. So annoying the few games that do this, why is it so hard to just launch in VR when i launch it from SteamVR? Almost every VR game does this just fine, really annoying and tedious when they don't.

Overall though, pretty neat and immersive game. At one point I started to reach in my pocket for my phone to take a picture of a funny little RIck and Morty reference before remembering I'm in a VR game so obviously any time the immersion is to that point, that's pretty great. It's got a pretty neat story and reveal as to wtf is actually going on.

Some of the puzzles are pretty good, but I'd say it's mostly a "go back and forth grabbing things" and "make sure you don't overlook a little key laying somewhere or anything" kind of puzzle game kinda like Inside rather than a "figure out how to make this work" kind of puzzle game like Portal or Talos Principle. So that's a little annoying, but they at least threw in a few good ones unlike Inside where they were all just tedious.

Like many VR games, it's neat but the story is pretty short. I'd say I paused to do real life things for a total of about half an hour but still beat it in 2.5 hours while really being thorough and making sure I don't miss any little jokes or logs or anything.

Overall, it's a solid VR experience but I'd probably recommend getting it on sale. I got it for $10 during the summer sale and I'm happy with that, if I had paid $25 for it I'd probably be a little frustrated.

I don't remember what I paid for this game(I know I got it on sale), but honestly even if it was free I wish I hadn't wasted my time playing it. Puzzle games like Portal and Talos Principle VR actually make you have to think about how you're supposed to get things done and can be a challenge at times. This one's "puzzles" are always very obvious but just tedious. It might be something where you have to go one way, go back the way you came, go back to where you originally went, things like that. Or something where you have to get the timing just right so you end up having to do it over a few times because of that. It's never a matter of actually figuring much out.

There are literally six buttons you use(left, right, up, down, jump, grab) and a pretty huge chunk of the game is basically just holding down right. It's got a little bit of a creepy, horror element to it but nothing too extreme. I guess it might be a fun puzzle game for a little kid, but honestly I'd probably say that any kid young enough to be challenged by the puzzles is probably a little too young for the creepy, horror element.

After seeing how good the reviews were, I got it on sale and expected something more similar to Portal. As I went on, for a while I kept thinking that any time now it's gotta get to where it actually makes you think. I eventually realized it never was going to and thought about just quitting but figured I had to be getting pretty close to the end so I might as well finish it.

I waited forever to get this game, wanting it but not wanting to pay $30 for it. Every time there's a Steam sale, I'd check and and would be disappointed to see that Beat Saber is the one game on my wishlist that isn't on sale. Finally, when the Summer Sale came around I decided I was going to go ahead and buy it either way because if it isn't on the Summer Sale, it won't be on sale any time soon.

I never should've waited so long. I've bought a few other VR games since the summer sale started that I haven't tried yet, but I'm pretty confident this is going to be my most played VR game from now on. It's so much fun. Also a lot more of a workout than I expected it to be. I haven't even tried any custom songs yet or anything, only the campaign, so I'm looking forward to that adding a whole other great element to the game.

Reading some of the reviews made me want to write a review to point out that some of the things people(even with a ton of hours) say in these reviews are things that just scream "I am TERRIBLE at this game" and correct some of those things.

First of all, a lot of people talk about how impossible official servers are if you don't have a massive tribe and how everything takes forever... Yes and no, and all of these are exaggerations. In PVP, you need at least a decent sized tribe and you need a lot of them investing a ton of time or you'll most likely get wiped. In PVE, I play solo and so do an absolute ton of people who have insane bases and a ton of great dinos(You can see my hours played, I play official as a one man tribe and I have a dope base and a lot of insane rexes, spinos, wyverns, etc.) To me, the thought of playing unofficial or single player with jacked up settings sounds like just playing a game on super easy mode all day. In official, you have to play smart, you want to plan your big tames for weekends(when it's 2x taming), and things that shouldn't come easy don't come easy.

On the negative side, yes there are issues with tame cap and lag spikes on many servers. However, the addition of cryopods greatly improved this on many servers. There's still lag, but in servers where the community is willing to do what's best for everyone(including themselves) and cryo dinos that don't need to be out, tame cap isn't an issue and lag is improved. The devs even made dinos in cryopods earn XP much faster than when they're just sitting around to encourage players to use them the way they should. The lag spikes will probably never be a total non-issue. It's a massive map where people build massive bases and tame massive amounts of dinos.

If you're someone who can't stand when a game isn't perfect and totally polished, you probably won't like Ark. If you want a grinding, but fun and rewarding game and can deal with some lag that can occasionally even be really bad, you'll love Ark. I did get it on sale(and originally had it on XBox cheaper because I got it during early access), but to me, it is worth full price.

Oh and one huge piece of advice... Be willing to ask questions, look things up, etc. There are a lot of people that play a ton and are terrible at this game, be willing to listen to the people that are good and know what they're doing.

Edit: Just wanted to update and point out that at the time of originally writing this review I had about 800 hours played. Thought that was worth pointing out since my part about my hours and things I have would, over time look more and more like you have to put in a ton of time to get those things... Which sure, you do have to put in time, but I think official rates are fine for if you do plan to play a lot. If you don't plan to play a lot but still want to reach tek tier and whatnot, then you're someone who'd benefit from higher rates.

It's alright, a little more "point and click" type game than I'd like for it to be but it's a kind of cool experience. When I first got to the point of getting in the Batmobile I thought that was gonna be really cool annnnnd it just cuts to where you're going, you never are actually in the Batmobile.

Overall though, it seems like it's got a lot of story to play through(I haven't gone very far) and it's a pretty neat VR experience for cheap. I'm not even a fan of Batman so if you're a huge Batman fan I'd imagine it'd be even cooler, although the lack of actually doing some things might be more disappointing too.

Early Access Review
Very clunky, but a lot of VR shooters are right now plus it's not like I went in with big developer expectations. Fun game, I'd definitely recommend grabbing it when you see it on sale.

It's PUBG Mobile but even dumber and on PC. Garbage, don't waste your time trying it out.

I bought this to play in VR and was very disappointed and requested a refund for several reasons.

1. The VR is very janky. SteamVR doesn't recognize it as a VR game, it sees it as a regular game. So when I first went to launch it from the SteamVR home like I normally do with my VR games, it only gave me the option to launch it in theater and I was starting to think I messed up and thought the game was VR when it isn't. It turns out that it is, but long story short, you just have to launch it like normal and set it to VR in the display settings and then it will still always just be on the monitor in the menus but once you load in to a race/practice/whatever it will load in to your VR headset.

2. You don't use your VR controllers at all, and using an XBox(or whatever) controller is just as janky as the VR is. The menus only work with the mouse and keyboard. So if you're wanting to play in VR with your XBox controller, you have to go through the menus with your mouse/keyboard and monitor then start the race and put on your headset and grab your controller.

3. I thought this was a game designed to be VR and then they allowed access to play with a monitor but it may be strange that way... It seems quite the opposite, I only did the practice but it seems to me like anyone playing on a monitor is going to have a significant advantage. So it could still be kind of neat driving in VR, but I was kind of expecting turning the wheel with your actual hands and expecting it to be geared more towards VR so that the VR players aren't the ones at a disadvantage.

4. I could put up with all of that and would still have fun with it, but it's also just not at all the type of racing game I expected it to be. Seeing the reviews about how it's this hardcore, super realistic racing game I was really excited... It turns out that it's one of those racing games that's alllllll about drifting. I realize that's what some people like, but it's not what I expected and it's not what I like in a racing game.

So if you're looking for a racing game geared towards getting really good at drifting around all the turns perfectly and especially if you're looking to play on a monitor, you'll probably love this game. If you're looking for a realistic racing game or looking to play in VR and don't want to deal with being up against people on monitors who have an advantage over you or are very bothered by weird and janky menu/VR controls, you'll probably be requesting a refund if you get this game.
