a lot of internet tough guys and 'anti-sjw' types really hated this game for a long time and that's a good enough reason to play it

its really good, though i own the GOG version and not the steam version so im not sure why its letting me review it here

lo, you are the pale rider. you are pestilence, mammon, and warfare in concentrate. you have been sent forth by a higher power to deliver retribution unto these people consumed by their own possessions. you bring annihilation, and they shall worship you for it. you bring complete, unflinching and unaccommodating unity to a galaxy plunged in chaos. you are also listening to shibuya-kei on your ipod.

i recently picked this one up again and started playing it out of nostalgia after remembering that i own it. i've had this game since 2014 and can remember when some of its biggest DLCs dropped (the BBQ pack, the Big Bank heist, the Golden Grin, the Diamond, etc). the ps3 demo for payday: the heist featuring the first world bank heist was one of the things i would continually replay back when i didn't have the money to buy any games, and i think a little after the h3h3 character pack was added was when i put PD2 down until pretty recently.

that having been said, people who like 4-player co-op games or people who might be looking for something in the style of Left 4 Dead are going to find something they'll enjoy here. the game can be buggy, there's way too much content paywalled behind dlc than there should be, and back when i was playing online you were guaranteed to get kicked from a server before finishing the heist almost as often as actually finishing one. however, the characters and worldbuilding in the game are interesting (fleshed out in a bit more detail with the game's various trailers and promo material) and the gameplay style makes my heart pound like i'm actually getting shot at - beating back hordes of cops, getting to the mission objective by clawing my fingernails into the dirt, everything hinging on a few bullets, a few more seconds of running, throwing the bags into the van and just barely making the mark, etc.

i think the game is much larger in filesize than it really needs to be (85 gb at the moment, really?) but i'm a spoiled boomer who thinks counter-strike: source being 4 gigs is a normal size in a world where i just installed mgs delta for about 150 gbs. the elephant in the room when talking about payday 2 is payday 3, which i haven't played even a second of nor watched very much of but i hear only "mixed" things about it, which is unfortunate. whatever 3's reputation is, 2 remains a game i can hop on whenever i want to hit an armored transport convoy, or when i want to drop a gigantic piggy bank through the roof, or if i want to flush cocaine down a toilet to piss off a russian mob boss so much that he'll come out of his panic room and get blown to pieces by my grenade launcher

many heists in this game can be run stealthily, and that's a valid playstyle (even if, maybe even especially if you're playing with friends), but at this point i find going loud and running and gunning to be much more enjoyable than the anxious waiting that comes with stealth runs. also, while i haven't played online recently, i did check the server browser and the amount of games that were open should be enough to put any accusations of PD2 being a dead game to rest

i have fond memories of playing this game for years with people who i no longer know where they even are or how they're doing. over ten years later, i'm still rocking with payday 2

better than cs:go imo, super nostalgic for me personally; you probably already own this

no skin/case stuff, no competitive/casual divide
community servers with surf, gungame, and zombie escape maps are still kicking (they could certainly use more people though)
less bots than tf2
also buying it gives you all the stuff to play around with in gmod which is a plus

just pure, distilled counter-strike
