Kotamavania: Ritual of the Academy Citadel.
If you're looking for a top-tier metroidvania - look no futher. This is it. This is THE metroidvania. THE Igavania I've been looking for.
Nice visuals, tight gameplay, interesting lore - it's got it. It's so good, I'd argue that in terms of gameplay and overall polish it manages to surpass Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night by Igarashi himself.

Solid seal of approval: 9.5/10.
I'm on my first playthrough and I'm definitely gonna go for a second playthrough on higher difficulties later even though the game gets quite hard near the end even on Normal.

This is your classic B-tier Metroidvania that does absolutely nothing special.

I can recommend this game only to those who are familiar with the genre and its tropes. If you're craving some more metroidvania action with lots of expansive and picturesque locations for dirt cheap - this might be it. It's quite a simple metroidvania that focuses mostly on exploration which you do have to keep in mind.

Pros:
-Beatiful locations with extremely detailed backgrounds and lots of visual effects
-The music is quite relaxing, not something that makes you bored but rather puts your mind at ease
-The game has some voice acting and ...it's okay at best

Cons:
-Platforming is not very pleasant here. While mechanically the game is solid I genuinely could not get used to the fact most platforms are always just a little out of your reach when jumping and the game expects you to backtrack a little, find a small hill, jump off of it and then dash into a platform. I've never played a metroidvania that does this so often throughout so many locations. This feels so wrong on so many levels and this is a clear sign that whoever was resposible for level design didn't have much experience a) playing metroidvanias (where the flow is very important when it comes to traversing large distances) b) (designing levels for videogames in general)
-The story is exceptionally unengaging and your 'familiar' doesn't make the task of listening to it any easier since both her character and her voice are about just as obnoxious as that one cat from a certain game called Persona 5. Yes, I'm talking Morgana-level of annoyance and I wish this character was simply not present in the game at all.

Why is it a positive review then? I didn't have an ugre to drop it within the first 10 minutes of playing - that means the game was 'entertaining enough' to keep me interested...Until I saw Kotama: Academy Citadel and it immediately managed to overshadow my interest for Afterimage with how well-made of a game it is. If I had to make a small list just to show you where Afterimage would be it would look something like this:

S-tier: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night / Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night / Kotama: Academy Citadel
A-tier: Blasphemous / Guacamelee / Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight
B-tier: Afterimage <-
C-tier: Itorah

Verdict: 6/10
It's okay, I guess?

What to add:
-Ability to change scroll speed mid-game
-Add keyboard menu navigation
-Proper offset menu
-Difficulty system rework with a separate graph to show (density/alternations/arrows)
-Lower requirements to get rewards in daze mode (being able to select lower than trance difficulty + lower the requirements)
-Gray background has got to go, it's too boring seeing almost nothing but gray when you're learning how to play and that's what a player is gonna see for hours, make default gray background an option (focused mode for when you actually need it) and spice things up somehow
-Sound balance is very poor, track previews are significantly quieter than the actual music, the music itself is obnoxiously loud by default
-Since most people won't bother getting a fighting stick just to play one game, make at least some suggestions on how to play the game on keyboard because that's your main entry barrier, most people can barely play 4k and imagine burdening those poor souls with a task of coming up with a 12 key layout, think about that for a second
-There is no full combo animation at the end of the track? Why?
-There needs to be a way to pick custom colors for arrows because reading a barrage of monotone-gray arrows is really hard

There has to be a game to be rated in the first place.

I adore this game, it's simple and fun!

Pros:
-Not only is the game gorgeous, the artstyle is very consistent and the backgrounds have a lot of details, you always have something nice to look at
-It does have a decent OST
-The gameplay is fun yet moderately challenging, somewhat reminiscent of Metal Slug albeit at a much slower pace with Dark Souls-like dodging (rolling) and switching your weapons depending on the situation
-Presentation is excellent (cutscenes and animations) while the story is simply there to make you chuckle (or cringe), nothing more and nothing less

Cons:
-The game is locked at 30fps
-For some reason gamepad controls are less responsive and signigicantly more delayed than playing on keyboard + mouse

While I do understand that these are some serious drawbacks, I didn't find them to be a 'deal breaker' for me. The game is more than playable and 30fps doesn't detract from the experience even a tiny bit.

It's a solid 8/10. While I don't think I'll be revisiting the game after completion, I'm having a lot of fun playing it right now and that alone is worth something.

This is a DLC you'd buy in very specific cases.
In my instance, it was The BMS of DjMax Respect - 8K Standard.

First of all, the presentation is phenomenal. The theme is miles better than what we have in DjMax Respect V. They used different installements of DjMax for every mode:
- DjMax Respect (PS4 version with System BGM by Mycin that I absolutely love) for Basic Mode which I find HILARIOUS because DjMax Respect V was the sole reason behind BASIC mode appearing in EZ2ON in the first place
- DjMax Portable 3 for Online with its real title theme, even DjMax Respect V in its Portable 3 theme uses the wrong theme for title screen. What is even funnier is that they use Portable 3 for ONLINE, the only installment that had NO MULTIPLAYER. What kind of sick humour is that? :D

Themes aside, I really liked sampling in this DLC, it's top-notch. SP are flexing those extra samples by constantly inserting them whenever they can. That said, if there's something negative I have to say about this DLC - it's the charts.

Half of the charts are outright awful, I'm not gonna lie. While I can appeariate the fact that Cypher Gate SHD uses Redesigned version of the song, whatever they have in NM and HD (8K) is downright bad charting. It's so bad it reminds me of some of the worst charts the world of BMS has to offer. LNs when uncalled for, constant barrage of symmetrical non-sense and overall lack of flow is what kills those charts for me.

And while some charts are really good like Xeus 8K HD, Airwave 8K HD, Only for You 8K SHD, some of them are horrible like Raise Me Up 8K HD / SHD, Cypher Gate 8K NM / HD (SHD was suprisingly good), Black Gold HD with again, LNs that were completely uncalled for.

I know this DLC came out a long time ago, but compared to new original DLCs like Lucent Soiree, Tano*C pt.II, Night Traveler this feels like a huge step back in terms of charting to the point it completely ruins some of the songs.

Overall, it's a decent DLC dlc, but if you come from BMS/IIDX for some delicious 8K content and play mostly 7+1 (and not the intended 4+4 way) - you're gonna struggle here, a lot. Keep that in mind.

Super chill DLC I cannot recommend enough.

Really enjoyed Stargazer, City of Funk and Laika.
GEHENNA was a nice surprise. I'm not a huge fan of Mori's tracks, but this one hit all of the right spots. The music, the sampling, the BGA felt just right. And it plays like 冥 but on steroids multiplied by 4.

If there's a single thing I personally dislike - it's how ridiculously overcharted Dement ~After Legend~ is.
Sure, GEHENNA is hard but you can distinctly hear every sample since intense nature of the track kind of calls for it. Dement, on the other hand, should have received revised charts that don't rely on quiet melody and barely audible percussion. It's this kind of sampling that I hate even in IIDX / BMS, a cheap way to boost the difficulty of a song by splitting a single sound into mutliple smaller ones with descending / ascending sound level. Doesn't feel very good to play.

Other than that - a really good legacy DLC with a huge tracklist (21 tracks + 16 more tracks to come).
