Before I go into everything great about this game, I want to put down a few issues. The combat isn't next gen. That part won't break any molds or tread new ground. It's not bad; it's just not the main draw for the game. Some of the AI could use some polish, but I suppose the mobs weren't intended to be intelligent either. The learning curve is fairly high to begin with, and It's punishing in ways that aren't exactly obvious. You'll probably end up starting a completely new game, even if you could keep moving forward, because the first few days are critical to get your base set up so you won't be overwhelmed later. The UI is a little clunky and could use some more work. It's only 2D and no one's going to be bragging about the graphics.

All that said, this is what I always hoped for from games like Dead Space or System Shock. It's almost completely nonlinear with actual choices that will affect your chances for survival. Do I power these buildings to slow the spread of the infection, even though there's a chance the generator will overheat? Wait a few hours for that weapons research to finish or charge in right now because there's no time to lose? Resources are tight. The crafting system is pretty good. The colony management is well done. Subterrain gives a real sense of being alone on Mars during an alien outbreak with little more than your wits and a trusty sidearm.
