This one sat on my wishlist for a while as I have other "job simulator" games, which I have had mixed feelings about, but once I got started, this one really grabbed me.

The gameplay loop is satisfying, as the game introduces new ship configurations and components to puzzle out how to deal with efficiently and without death. I mostly succeeded at these, and had some fun and tense moments where I just scraped through or had to be scraped from the sides of the ship.

Only during the credits did I realise that Weaver is played by Aaron Douglas, Chief Tyrol from BSG, which really put a smile on my face! The other characters are good, if a little derivative. The humour, mostly based around corporate slavery, tickled me.

Overall, worth getting if you like this sort of game.

Early Access Review
What makes this game stand out from other survival-style entries that I have played seems to come from the developers' ethos from the start of development.

They could have tried to make it like other 'realistic' survival games where you can starve or dehydrate, which becomes an unnatural grind to maintain. They could have really punished you hard upon death. They could make repairs costly, resources scarce, and force you to start on each server in nothing but rags. They could have made the graphics super-realistic and intensive.

Instead, they made a game where the mechanics don't get in the way of the fun, drive you to explore without pulling back on the reins too much, and is still a joy to look at without needing a top-range setup. It is by no means easy but my mistakes don't make me want to stop playing, only get better.

Plus, the multiplayer is so easy to set up. All those friends of yours that own it already can get you in on their games, hand you an axe and a tankard of mead and off in the longship you go.

Skål!

I have loved SS2 since I first played it many years ago and thankfully none of the old-school shooter elements have been lost in its transition to high definition.
With a major improvement in the graphics department (although the Kleer skeletons have changed for the worse in my opionion) this is just what I enjoyed in my childhood with a few choice extras in better supported multiplayer, survival modes and - of course - Steam achievements!
