Fast-paced and full of action, tension and drama, the CHORDIOID demo is intensely promising for a first look from an indie developer. What stands out is just how *excellent* the music is, and how many different tracks are already present in the demo - the game was definitely made with music in mind first, and everything flows from that love. The jokes are fun (hello, cold dogs!) and while haters might call it similar to Undertale/Deltarune, true fans will recognise the genuine adoration for Homestuck underlying everything.

I played on normal difficulty, which turned out to be pretty challenging! I'm not exactly an Osu! player or anything, but I have done my time in the rhythm game mines, so I was pleasantly surprised it wasn't just a pushover. Beware of attacks coming for you while you're mid-attack, as notes sometimes jumpscare you if you're not ready for your turn to end!

The demo gives you a short little exploration of town, a bunch of optional battles with overworld enemies, and two/three boss battles (depending on if you count the initial fight), and a peek at the drama you'll get to learn more about once the full game's out. I heavily recommend giving it a whirl, and challenging yourself to perfect all the fights!

this game is hubris personified. snakonified? hubris turned into snakes turned into oil turned into money turned into snakes. you only make it as difficult as you choose, so if you're overwhelmed you know you did it to yourself. great game! definitely the type of thing you could set up quick party rounds of, too. take a shot each time you get run over by a tractor (do not, you will get alcohol poisoning). only gripe is the soundtrack... but you can mute that and play your own music, so it's a really minor issue

Want to dice with death?

Turned into a die, you are pitted against dungeons of Lady Luck's design, and you live or die by your rolls. You pick up various equipment along the way, not unlike a deck builder, but with limited slots for you to carry that into combat and only so many dice you roll each turn, choose carefully to maximise your advantage. There are various characters to choose from as well, each with a unique class ability in order to change the way you think about your outcomes. The Warrior prefers high rolls for maximum damage, while the thief works best with lower ones. The Witch is notably unique in that you must first prepare the spells you take with you into battle before you're even able to use them - and so your in-combat strategy is highly reliant on which roll you need to roll so you can use another roll on that spell.

My personal highlight so far has been stealing the enemy alchemist's Bear Potion and using it as a Thief - and turning into a Bear for the rest of the dungeon. Sadly I did not get to keep the Bear as an unique character though.

Overall, a fun little rogue-lite in some ways similar to Slay the Spire, with a healthy dose of RNG to keep you on your toes while playing. Would recommend!

Early Access Review
An innovative take combining both cardgames and roguelikes, and managing to deliver on a singleplayer cardgame that isn't Solitaire, Slay the Spire not only enjoys a fantastic concept but also dedicated devs working hard to bring to reality the vision that they have for their child to life. Early Access belies the amount of effort that has already been put into making this packed with more content than most indie games out there, and with the high replayability in Ascensions, value for money is guaranteed. Give this one a whirl if you want a pick-up-and-play that challenges you at every corner.
