extremely fun & extremely brief

An all-time great ATLUS game and one of the best JRPGs I've ever played. The gameplay goes way beyond traditional "number-bigger" growth due to the genius archetype system, and the story is a lot heavier, both emotionally and politically than you'd expect. A great starting point for modern JRPGs for newcomers and a brilliant expansion of the genre for people who loved Persona 5 but maybe felt that it could have been *more*.

within one hour of gameplay you’ve gotten cancelled by a v-tuber, learned about sexism, sent to hawaii on a mission, weighed the option to bring your pet crawfish, all to wind up dealing with a hangover (2009) situation where you’re arrested by evil cops while the game explains the corruption of the police to you. a game that must be experienced to be believed. one of the best in the series.

it's everything and more.

Boring and soulless. The audience for this game doesn't exist anymore, but even then, I struggle to imagine 2016-me excited about the vast emptiness of this game. I gave it a fair shake as indicated by my playtime. While this game isn't marred by the standard Bethesda blues, it contains a multitude of problems that patches can not fix.

The core of the game is the problem. You may look at the modern "we fixed it" stories and hope for something similar here, but it will not happen, because the developers are commenting on negative reviews and defending their empty program. I don't think they could fix it if they wanted. Whereas games like Cyberpunk and No Man's Sky were buggy or flat, Starfield fails to conjure up any sort of unique flavor. It winds up feeling like a Fallout mod at best, and at worst, without any identity at all.

A decade long dev cycle that feels, more than anything, like a company riding their own coattails and going through the motions. Art with no purpose. Another open world game for the feeding tube. More content for content hungry content eaters.

This game sat me down and yelled at me. It said "Why are you playing games that feel like work?" Why do I play games that feel like work? I want to play a game where I can transform into a dwarf, beat up children, and then change back before they can find me. BG3 is imaginative, fun, crass, and wholly original. There's nothing like it, and even if you don't love CRPGs, you will find something to love here. I felt myself waning as a gamer. Now I am reborn.
