There's a moment in Lair of the Clockwork God where a character who could be considered a game designer says that they "make statements *through* the established structures, not despite them."

That's a pretty good summary of what makes this game great. The most memorable puzzles and jokes are based around the mechanics, not just grafted on top of things.

And boy, are those jokes funny! It's rare that a game can make me laugh at all, much less this much. There are gags in this game that had me cackling embarrassingly loudly. Humor is subjective but, like, for example: I can't stand toilet humor, but Ben and Dan managed to make me laugh at their toilet humor. They are very good at what they do.

I was skeptical about the point and click adventure/platformer hybridization, but it works, and it makes the adventure game parts mechanically satisfying. The platforming's not perfect, but it's perfectly solid (it reminded me a lot of Hue's platforming, except with a lot more things to do) and the fact that it's really a puzzle platformer means that the game is still heavily weighted towards puzzles even when you're not in the adventure game half of it. I'm probably going to try to speedrun Lair, which is something I wouldn't do for most adventure games.

I don't usually write Steam reviews—especially because they mostly function as a "should you buy this game" and I don't like reducing my opinions to that—but I had to make an exception for this game because it's really good and I don't think it's getting the attention it deserves. It is more than worth $19.99. Please play it.
