"If you want to support a game that will be amazing in a year, buy the supporter edition. If you just want to play a tactical shooter, wait around a year or so until more content is added and bugs/issues are all fixed." That's what I said in my first review.

And damn...they did it.

It's been over a year since I first got this game and dropped this review, and the transformation has been incredible. The Spearhead update has completely changed the experience of Gray Zone Warfare. The broken, buggy, barebones game that existed on launch is gone. What’s here now feels like a major step toward what could become one of the greatest tactical shooters available.

There are new weapons, new gear, new enemy factions with their own custom gear, weaponry, and behaviors, hundreds of new quests, major QOL changes, noticeably better optimization, and so much more. The devs at MADFINGER have worked their asses off on this game, and have shown they will continue to work their asses off in the future.

The gameplay and story finally feels like it is in the perfect spot. Encounters are challenging, there are plenty of documents to read and immerse yourself in the world, and the game places a strong emphasis on player exploration. You're encouraged to get out there, figure things out on your own, and uncover interesting locations. And for players familiar with the deeper lore behind certain locations such as Ban Pa and Ground Zero, there are definitely some very unsettling surprises waiting (do NOT go to Ban Pa at night, dat haunted place is scary).

Speaking of locations, they look phenomenal. The level of detail across the entire map is impressive. From dense jungles to sprawling cities to small rural villages, every area feels carefully crafted and alive. There really aren’t any places that feel empty or neglected.

The gunplay feels great overall (though the older gun sounds could definitely use a remake cuz holy BoomFX), the questing changes are fantastic, and the new AI feels fair while still being genuinely dangerous. I could go on, but I’d probably be here for hours listing everything MADFINGER has done right.

Please do yourself a favor and pick up this game. If you can, drop the extra money to support them as well. This is a company that is truly passionate about their project, and deserve to be recognized for it.

After about 30 hours, I can see what they're going for and I'm glad to be supporting it. It is very obviously far from finished, but the foundation is there to make a great game. I have been playing mostly with friends, and outside of the performance issues and crashes, it is incredibly fun.

However, I really only recommend it at the moment to people who want to support the game in the long haul. I bought supporter edition knowing that it would be full of bugs, but it seems that a large majority of players do not realize that supporter edition is meant to actually SUPPORT the game (ironic given the edition name quite literally spells it out for you). Do not expect it to just work and always be a pleasant experience. I have lost tens of thousands of dollars worth of gear, including almost everything I got with the supporter edition. Is it annoying? Yes, but I go into more raids knowing it will probably happen, and I don't care all that much past initial annoyance.
