I'm only a couple hours in and I have to say, this game is easily a favorite already. I've personally bought and gifted two copies of the game to close friends, and made several recommendations already.

I'm not finished with the -game- yet but felt I'd give my two cents:

If I had to quickly explain this game to someone a friend that was unaware, I would say that it's Super Metroid, but with the weaponry of Castlevania, and the boss rooms of Megaman, with the furry artwork of one of my favorite artists. It fills a particularly lacking niche in the indie game genre, and will likely be a gem for years to come. While I doubt it'll be as replayable as something more sandbox-driven, I have no doubt that the player base will create fan content and perhaps even mods of this game as time goes on, but we'll bury that bone of a thought for now.

Overall? Solid 8/10. I have purchased triple-A games that have cost 3-4x what this cost me. Pick this game up, it is literally twelve dollars right now. I've seen complete shovelware go for that steal of a price. Even if you play it for thirty minutes and decide it's too difficult or not your cup of tea, you'll go away having experienced an indie game legend that others are sure to be talking about.

Gameplay: 9/10 While the game does instruct you pretty clearly in most cases, I stumbled for a second when I was instructed to press Select to access the radio -- not realizing I needed to first pull up the inventory menu to do so. There's trickjumps and nes-era style gameplay here - graphical lag that feels like it was intentionally placed to give that same retro vibe, without being a pain in the ass. The game flows nicely, and the one time I thought I was doing something that might break the game, I was richly awarded. The Devs Think Of Everything applied nicely with this one. I'm playing on a PS5 controller and while there is no vibration or anything like that, it doesn't feel out of place with a NES-like game being played. It's a comfy, uncramped experience.

Difficulty: 6/10 (Moderate). Reading comments, I was expecting Cuphead levels of difficulty. I'm not finished yet, and have had my bottom handed to me a few times, but it's as difficult to me as Super Metroid was. Just keep trying, but it's not a game that's going to induce rage in anyone with a semblance of self control. While the game by default doesn't hold your hand and does have its trying moments, it does have a simple mercy for those less-inclined for difficulty. There's some cheats that the game will apparently give you out of the blue that will likely help if the game gets too frustrating to continue and you wish to advance to experience the content.

Story: 7/10. We have a sci-fi tale that can drastically change appearance depending on your own personal tastes. It's fun, reminds me a bit of Trials In Tainted Space. Your mileage may very depending on what options you have decided upon, I think. Taken at face value the story is a bit ridiculous, but that's sorta on-par for a game emulating an era where killing a boss makes the whole facility go into self-destruct mode.

Replayability? 8/10 but... I'm not sure since I'm still going through it. You're given a choice between playing as the brother and sister, so I imagine there's at least two playthroughs worth of deliciously put-together content that will provide at least a few dozen sessions of enjoyment to all but the most vigorous explorers... given that they are of the mindset that will allow them to enjoy playing as both a male and female character, of course. I can imagine I'll be coming to this game pretty frequently in the coming months for continued playthroughs.

Overall, I really love this game, and the second I post this review I'll be nice and recharged enough to jump back into the heat of things with it. Devs, thanks for the based, absolute -gem- that this has been, I hope to see more things from you in the future!
