It is quite difficult to isolate this game from its predecessors and talking about it without bringing up the rest of the so-called survivor trilogy, and despite it belonging to a whole different class of games it cannot be separated from the early classics. This might seem unfair towards Shadow at first but we cannot take it out of the context it sets itself in, after all they chose to give it the name Tomb Raider, and our heroine Lara Croft, albeit a different Lara.

This trilogy encapsulates three chapters in the formation of the character of Lara, all three games feel like a natural continuation while adding new ideas to make them distinct enough. The first game took a young inexperienced (literally fresh off the boat) Lara and threw her into an episode of Survivor whilst giving her an (un)healthy dose of trauma and PTSD. in terms of gameplay it was a complete departure from the old days of tomb raiding and instead focused on a heavily cinematic action adventure that basically consisted of a cover shooter platformer littered with a mix of different ideas of survival horror. The game was experimental in that manner, laying new grounds for a new Lara, but this left us with poorly paced story with action scenes in between.
The second game sees Lara looking more towards her inner self and dealing with the trauma of the first game. At this stage of her formation she looks back on her past, to finish her father's fruitless quest of eternal life, and deal with childhood trauma along the way. The second entry is more balanced in all aspects, most importantly, it is properly paced with more open areas and tombs to explore. The crafting and survival systems seem to have matured with upgrades feeling more significant.
After mowing down an army of highly trained mercenary soldiers, killing hordes of immortal beings who survived for a thousand years, and ethnically cleansing a few indigenous tribes, Lara finally reaches her ultimate form, John Rambo. We've got mud camouflage, giant knife, bad ass underwater stealth kills, helicopters exploding, shooting, and more explosions just for good measure, yet I didn't mind it as much as in the first two games because here it was delivered in small doses and felt more significant to the gameplay and to the story of Lara becoming her true new self.
The third game finally lives up to the title of Tomb Raider by finally giving us satisfying head-scratching puzzle tombs and relatively challenging platforming, sadly all of this can be easily missed because here it is even more sidelined and completely optional. Sure the main game does offer us puzzles and platforming yet I found the side missions and challenge tombs a lot more interesting and most importantly fun.
This trilogy carries the name and (some) DNA of the classics, and yet it is an entirely different beast, the first games are extremely precise puzzle platformers with minimal focus on story, these new ones are action packed interactive films for 40% of their playtime. This puts them in an awkward position where we must compare the incomparable because this is not THE Lara Croft, this is A Lara Croft.

Early Access Review
Very fun and addictive to play. The only thing this game needs is a litte bit of balance. Some Champs feel overpowered and others useless.
