I saw that the game was on sale as I was playing and had to give it a boost. Skip to the bottom if you want the TLDR. This is honestly everything I could have asked for a in a spiritual successor to Paper Mario: TTYD. I should also preface that I was Kickstarter backer, so if the devs see this, I am loving it so far and sorry it took me so long to get to playing it. A lot of good games have been coming out recently.

The combat has more depth than TTYD that makes it incredibly fun to engage with and try to make strategies and build characters. You have to take in to account similar factors to TTYD, but they have been expanded on. The position, stance, and height of the enemy are all things you have to consider when taking your turn. Making strategies and trying to optimize a turn is incredibly engaging and has given me several combat puzzles to solve. The trinket system and ability to improve attacks allows you to build your characters in different ways. They still fall slightly under their assigned architype, but the breadth is much larger than TTYD.

All the bosses I fought have been a nice challenge and always bring an interesting mechanic to the table. I actually had to lose to a boss a couple of times to go back and retool my characters to win the fight. It made me think about my strategy and approach.

The writing has also gotten me hooked. At first I thought the plot was a little a basic at the beginning, but as I finished chapter 2, they hint at something a bit larger happening. It wouldn't be a Paper Marioesque game without a witty and charming cast of characters and I feel this game delivers. Some times the dialogue is cringe worthy, but that's the endearing part of it. A lot of tongue and cheek jokes and some goofy puns. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I currently have not finished the game, but will be continuing my playthrough. If you're a fan of Paper Mario, or similar RPGs such as Bug Fables, I could not recommend this to you enough. The combat is engaging and an interesting puzzle to solve, the bosses have been a great challenge to overcome, and the writing is superb.
