天安門廣場一直是許多政治事件和學生抗議活動的場所。

也許最著名的事件是1919年五四運動期間的抗議，毛澤東於1949年10月1日宣告中華人民共和國，周恩來死後1976年的天安門廣場抗議以及天安門廣場抗議1989年胡耀邦死後。後者導致了軍事鎮壓，數百名甚至數千名平民抗議者死亡。
在這些抗議活動中出現的最著名的圖像之一是，一名男子站在一排正在移動的坦克前，拒絕移動，這是在廣場附近的長安大街上捕獲的。

其他值得注意的事件包括在1949年宣告週年到1959年10月1日的年度大規模軍事展覽； 1984年中華人民共和國成立35週年閱兵式，適逢鄧小平的崛起； 1999年中華人民共和國成立50週年的軍事表演和遊行； 2001年的天安門廣場自焚事件；在2009年中華人民共和國成立60週年的軍事展示和遊行上，以及在2013年發生的一起車輛撞向行人的事件。
