after about a year of sitting on umineko, i would actively dissuade most people from playing it. now, this might sound as though i dont like the game, but if anything i just worry about how most people would take it. on its basis umineko is kind of a very cringy game where the protag is perversely groping his family members and such along with having a slew of trigger warnings to tell people about, but if you can look past all of that its when umineko really starts to shine. while it has a rough beginning and the story itself is extremely long, if you have the time and critical thinking skills to read this visual novel i would highly highly suggest it. i would also highly suggest you look up a trigger list for this game if you plan on getting into it, even if youre not usually triggered by some content. there is stuff like child abuse and psudeo-rape in the game and its better to know about that ahead of time.

there is a lot youll have to get through, or maybe you might enjoy the gritty characters they showcase in the game, in terms of character set up and development of the story. but once you have the basis of the game, it really does almost become an interactive game for the player to figure out the mysteries alongside battler. with an idiot of a protagonist, he isnt able to figure anything out until really the second arc of the story, so it makes it fun for the player to listen to beatrices hints towards the truth of the story. there are ways to figure out the story before you get to the end, but to be honest most of it is veiled under either comments that wouldnt seem as heavy without backstory, or a mystery that would be hard to understand without all of the pieces.

but, like i said, as someone who has been replaying the first arcs with my boyfriend, ive actually been able to see those little hints that are thrown in there. there is so, so much love in this game. the soundtrack is immaculate, the writing is gut wrenching, the art is very fun, the voice acting is spectacular, just overall creating an amazing experience. i would highly recommend you either mod this game with 7th mod or play it with umineko project as the steam version only offers the ryukishi sprites (which are charming in their own way) and the pachislot sprites. the ps3 sprites are (imo) the best way to experience the game, along with the updated backgrounds and having the voiced scenes adds a lot to the story. nonetheless, i would absolutely recommend umineko to whoever has the time and the will to read it.

if you want to learn about love, this is the game for you. because without love, it cannot be seen. <3
