If you watched the anime there isn't a whole lot new for you in the base game, but an incredibly enjoyable experience nonetheless. I couldn't recommend more.

This game was definitely overhyped after all those years, but even so manages to be one of the best games of the last 5 years I've played. AND YOU CAN PET THE CAT.

There have been noticable visual bugs but the game hasn't even been out 24 hours besides that this ♥♥♥♥ is the craziest single player experience I've seen in years.

Phasmophobia is still in early access, and a very early build at that, so things are subject to change as the game gets updated especially with how frequently they seem to be updating it. With that out of the way, the game at the time of this review already has plenty of elements in place that make it a great horror game. There are a variety of paranormal entities (about 10-12 or so?) that make every run a unique experience. This game can be enjoyed singleplayer, but the true amazement lies in the multiplayer aspect. Most horror games because exponentially less scary once you play with friends, which is what a lot of multiplayer horror games suffer from. However, Phasmophobia doesn't suffer from this issue as much. Even if you have a full group of 4 (Like I usually do), the game continues to feel scary by putting everyone on high alert, so you're constantly trying to operate as a cohesive unit while you're hunted by an invisible entity. It's also terrifying when you watch your friends get murdered one by one and you become the last one alive. Some ghosts require players to be alone to draw them out, so it's usually a big argument as to who is going to sit in the living room all by themselves while the rest watch on the night vision cameras. When this game isn't scary, it's definitely hilarious.

Despite the game being in essentially Alpha/Pre-Alpha, there are surprisingly few game-breaking bugs that make the experience unenjoyable. One large bug my group and I found was that a lot of the time our 4th person wouldn't load in and either get kicked to the main menu for no apparent reason or just crash their game. The in-game voice chat also had several issues where only certain people could hear each other. It also wasn't consistent in how this worked. Sometimes 1 person could hear the other 3 and they couldn't hear them, or 2 people could hear 1 person while 1 couldn't hear anyone, or any kind of combination you could imagine. At a point it game increasingly more frustrating so we decided to use Discord for all of our talking. The in-game voice recognition didn't seem to have many problems, and actually was quite accurate for picking up spoken words and phrases.

Overall, based on the current status, I'm going to give this game a 7/10. This game has some great features to it, and manages to feel scary even when in a group, especially on some of the larger and freaky maps (no spoilers however.) I highly recommend running through the training so you understand the different methods of figuring out which ghost you're dealing with. My group didn't do that and we struggled with our first 4 or so ghost hunts. There are some bugs that make the game hard to enjoy, but there are third party solutions to them (if you're not playing with randos of course) and overall they don't break the core of this game, which is ghost busting.

TL;DR Good game with solid mechanics, with few bugs that don't break the core element of horror this game portrays. I could definitely see this becoming something much greater than it is already.

P.S you have to pull the crucifix out while the ghost is hunting you, you can't just hold it out. Figured that out the hard way ;)
