Monster Hunter WIlds is certainly a (GREAT) game!

All of the issues have so far been fixed on my end. I can safely recommend this game now. Most issues involving performance have been ironed out, and the endgame is enjoyable.

Man, where do I start. I feel so conflicted about this game. I guess a good place to start is the elephant in the room. [insert Gammoth joke here]

The Story

The story is probably the worst part of the game, and it could absolutely be better. It should not have been a mainstay in the game itself. Unfortunately, they tried to be a story driven game and lost the identity of what made Monster Hunter, well, Monster Hunter. It was a pretty cliche story from start to finish, and I knew the outcome almost from the start. Nata, despite being a good character, had pretty confusing character development. I won't dive into it due to spoilers, but the story overall had terrible pacing, and could've definitely been written better. Besides, it is a mainline game, not Stories. It was entertaining for the most part, but the forced walk around and admire the atmosphere schtick drags on for way too long. There's so much downtime between hunts, smashed together in between potentially hours of cutscenes.

The Gameplay

The gameplay is definitely where the game shines the best. It feels as if it was Monster Hunter mixed with a little bit of Dragon's Dogma, and I am all for it. (Especially Insect Glaive, it feels so much better than it did in the beta.) I absolutely loved every hunt that I did, and all of the monsters were a ton of fun to fight and learn their movesets. However, with great gameplay comes pretty big drawbacks. Personally, I think they casualized the game a ton. Charge Blade, for example, doesn't feel the same, in fact it feels watered down and doesn't deliver the same dopamine rush you would get from a SAED (super amped elemental discharge), unlike in older games. Another good example is greatsword. It feels fantastic to play, but once again, feels very easy to deliver the best potential for it, and thus gets rid of a lot of the adrenaline you would get if you hit a perfect True Charged Slash.

With a new Monster Hunter, of course, comes a new gimmick, and this time it delivers. The wound mechanic is a straight upgrade from tenderizing and the clutch claw. It feels rewarding to attack the wounds, in fact it encourages it for the most part, since you can get extra damage, guaranteed critical hits, and a potential topple just from them.

On top of all of that, you also get extra materials. The grind doesn't feel as annoying as some older games, and it definitely feels more streamlined. You could just AFK and wait for a monster gem to appear on a hunt and get 4 guaranteed gems just by keeping it as an investigation and doing it as a field survey. Imo, it kind of kills the whole "fight the monster multiple times" type of grind, and kills a lot of hours you could've had enjoying the game. Though I do like being able to save investigations for free, I don't think we should just be rewarded gems like candy. The endgame, is rough. It is literally just Arkveld simulator. You want rarity 8 Artian? Arkveld. You want more materials to scrap FOR the Artian weapons? Arkveld. You want the best melding materials? Arkveld. It's nothing but him, and it ruins the endgame. At least World gave us multiple monsters to hunt to achieve the greatest gear. Hell, even Rise did.

As for the monsters, they are all phenomenal. I don't think I disliked a single one. All of the designs are fantastic, and they are so much fun to fight. I just wish there was more reason to fight them. I can't dive too deep into them, otherwise it sort of kills the fun of finding out.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I can't really recommend Wilds in the state it currently is in. The game is a mess and an absolute clusterf**k as I am writing this review. The endgame is dreadful, and there is nothing to do. I want to keep sinking hours into it, I really do, but I have already gotten bored as I have obtained all of the items I want.

As for the performance... well, we all knew it was coming. It sucks.

The performance is absolutely abysmal when it comes to handling and maintaining a full open-world environment. The game struggles to maintain 60-90 frames for me, even with frame generation on. Though, I don't use the upscaling as I probably should, but it makes the game horrendous to look at. Arguably worse than World.

I do want to recommend this game, and encourage others to play it, but at the moment it just isn't worth it. I love and have loved Monster Hunter since Freedom Unite, and I want to continue to enjoy Monster Hunter as much as I can. It's a shame.

Look. I'm going to be real with everyone that goes to check negative reviews. Do not listen to them. If it looks interesting, then try it out for yourself. I loved this expansion, and they still are adding. It also throws you back into a pool of memories by sending you back to the cosmodrone. Truly a fantastic piece. The narrative is good, and your guardian actually speaks more than one line. I feel horrible for using Stasis.
