I was talking to an old FPS gamer friend about this version of Doom last night and he brought up some really good points about how different this is than older FPS games like the original Doom or Quake all the way up to Quake 3.

It's no longer about good aim or good movement. The game has been bastardized into an achievement or gear hunt on every level. The fights themselves aren't even enjoyable because so many enemies can take away 90% of your health due to an overwhelming number of projectiles that you can't dodge. It forces you to use the chainsaw or melee enemies just to get your health back and interrupts the fight. It's also no longer about raw damage because specific weapons are needed to take out specific enemies. Sometimes I want to primarily use the super shotgun for all of my engagements because I'm having fun with it rather than being stuck with a limited ammo capacity for every single weapon and constantly switching between different weapons and mods. I don't want to have to prioritize upgrades and hunt for them... give me all of the abilities and upgrades from the get-go and progressively give me weapons. And then if you struggle beating a fight the game offers to turn on baby mode... come on.

I stopped playing the game for a few weeks because I got tired of it, especially the long-range jumps. Doom and Quake have always had some limited aspect of platforming but this has taken it to the extreme to the point that it's anxiety inducing and not the type of game I want to even play. Sometimes I just want to shoot enemies like any good FPS and watch them explode into a gooey mess. The takedowns are good for that, but it's not enough.
