TL;DR I almost never write reviews for games. But after playing this game, I felt compelled to do so. Amnesia: The Bunker sets a new standard for the horror genre, bringing the original Amnesia experience to a whole new level. Buy this game.

This game is a fantastic evolution of the series. Amnesia: The Bunker introduces a game design that's quite a new formula to the series, while also evoking traditional mechanics from Amnesia: The Dark Descent. You really don't want to miss out on this banger of an Amnesia title.

Story (Without Spoilers)

Amnesia: The Bunker features Henri Clément, a French soldier serving on the Western Front of World War I. After a near-death experience on the front lines, Clément wakes from a coma and finds himself back at his bunker in the infirmary, where his wounds have been tended. His injuries caused him to experience amnesia, but he has more pressing matters to worry about. Clément discovers that something has gone horribly wrong in the bunker. There is no one to be found, and he starts to unravel just what went down before he awoke. Henri realizes that he is trapped within the bunker with a vicious beast, with only one round left in his revolver. With the exits sealed, he must find a way to escape with his life.

The story of Amnesia: The Bunker, while a little short, will have you captivated until the very end, giving you many twists and turns along the way. The game's lore also has strong connections to the other games in the series.

Gameplay

I'll be honest, although I enjoyed Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs and Amnesia: Rebirth, they were clearly lacking in gameplay. Amnesia: Rebirth really just relied on collecting matches and fuel as the main resource management. Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs didn't even have an inventory system, nor the worry of oil or tinderboxes. These games were also very linear in their progression, and your only real options against enemies are to run or hide. While this isn't bad, most people seem to agree that it has been a bit overdone.

The Beast & the Generator.

It seems like Frictional Games realized these shortcomings, and then dropped Amnesia: The Bunker out of nowhere. Gameplay wise, they scrapped the whole idea of linear progression and went more into an open-world style with this game. There is one main antagonist in this game: The Beast. This monster will be hunting you for most of your time in the game, as he has dug tunnels throughout the bunker - and he HATES light. That's why it's so important to keep the generator fueled up, which provides power to the entire bunker. When the lights are on, it doesn't just provide you a sense of comfort, it actually deters the beast. When you make noise, he will become more active in your area and more likely to emerge from the tunnels. So you still have to worry about him and be conscious about the noise you make. Don't get complacent though - you're on the clock. The game gives you a pocket watch which allows you to time the generator, so you know when it's going to go out. So while you're out there trying to find a way to escape, you can hear that watch ticking away each second. Don't let the generator run out of fuel.

Blackout.

Because if it does, the bunker will have a blackout - and this is where ♥♥♥♥ goes down. The beast will constantly roam around the area, and the pitch darkness of the bunker would require the use of the flashlight in order to see. And yes, there is a flashlight! The best part is that the flashlight is unlimited use, but there's a catch. The flashlight is mechanical, as in it uses a little fan to generate electricity. Oh and you bet yourself that it's very noisy. Imagine having a blackout, because you couldn't find enough of the scarce fuel that's around the bunker. And then you need to see in order to get back to the generator, so you're cranking away at that flashlight while the beast is hunting you. It's absolutely terrifying. All while you need to solve puzzles using clues you find around the bunker, and whatever tools you can get, like a gun.

The Revolver.

For the first time in an Amnesia game, the player has a gun. To be specific, the standard-issue Modèle 1892 for French servicemen in WW1. Like everything other resource, there is a very limited supply of ammunition. This creates a really interesting dynamic in the game, where you can actually fight back against the beast. It requires exceptional bravery to do so, but it will give you some protection. Note however that the beast cannot be killed.

Ecosystem & Puzzles.

It seems like Frictional Games took quite a lot of inspiration from Alien: Isolation, which has a similar resource-management and very similar mechanics with the monster. But I actually think that Amnesia: The Bunker does it better. Frictional Games nailed it with making the game feel like a real survival situation. When you're playing the game, you can feel the tension and the anxiety. This is partly due to Amnesia's great atmosphere, but also the game mechanics really prey on your natural human response to things like fear, urgency, and pressure. So unlike in all other past Amnesia titles, you're thrown into a real survival situation and that is also reflected in the puzzles that you need to solve in order to progress. One wouldn't be wrong to expect that the puzzles are separate from the danger in Amnesia, because that's how it has always been done. But The Bunker does it differently. You're gonna have to solve the puzzles under the pressure of both the beast and the generator.

Atmosphere

Last but certainly not least, it wouldn't be an Amnesia game without an incredible atmosphere. This game does not fall short of those expectations. Everything from the eerie ambiance of the bunker, to the sounds of the beast crawling through the tunnels of the bunker, stalking you. You will hear the beast scratching within the walls, stomping through the bunker, with its roars reverberating throughout the hallways. You will hear the ticking of your pocket watch as your generator fuel dwindles away. You will hear your ears ringing after firing your gun or tossing a grenade. Everything in this game is masterfully designed to cause the player uneasiness, fright, and panic. I love it.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Frictional Games have outdone themselves here. Some might say that The Bunker is "the BOTW of the Amnesia series," referencing how the Legend of Zelda series was transformed by the carefully crafted mechanics of BOTW. And while the game is short, it is a very solid game. Perhaps the reason why it is short is because this game is meant to gauge the community reaction to the new evolution of the game. But regardless, we must rejoice the support for custom stories, and I cannot wait to see awesome creations by the community.

I really hope that you're able to enjoy this game as much as I did and I hope this review was helpful for you.

A sad excuse for a Battlefield game. Although some people may find joy in this game occasionally like me, it is the worst Battlefield game ever released and you should not buy it.

Enjoy yourself some Battlefield 4, 1, or V, but not this piece of ♥♥♥♥.
