In the humble quest for the perfect game, more than 10 years ago, I stumbled upon the ASCII Dwarf Fortress.
Free, supported by fans, the work of Tarn and Zach was as astonishing as it is today: a complex, sprawling game with more ways to play it than you could imagine.
It felt like looking at the Matrix screen: only you and some other initiates could be able to understand what was going on, the rest of the world could only see weird colored ASCII.

The spirit is still there, but now it has art and accessibility.

I don't simply recommend it, I am just thankful it exists, for without it I'd surely not be having the job I have, and I wouldn't ever have felt the surge of self-respect I felt when I started having FUN with this game.

This is a very unique take on "Detective Games", it's one of the most innovative things I've played in more than a decade - trust me, you've not experienced anything like this when it comes to procedural games.
Give it a try, it's cheap and it's very good!

So guys, here's the deal:
If you are good at Factorio, and I mean REALLY GOOD at it, drop whatever you're studying/your job and get into programming.
This game is good fun, IF you are the kind of person who enjoys spending hours optimizing a factory for the sake of optimization.

They said it's a glorified FPS.
And they may even be right, to be honest. But the stories it can tell (passively) are something worth your time and your money. Trust me, this game is definitely something. Try it , you won't be let down if you like playing a game and not whining about it.

The game is good fun, to be completely honest, but the controls are REALLY not my cup of tea.

If you search for a Minecraft/Terraria game, that's the wrong place.
This one is a pretty, funny metroidvania-like game, with some ideas (mostly the digging part) taken from Terraria.
Surely not a triple-A title, but it's funny and interesting for the 3-4 hours it gets to be beaten.
