Lovingly crafted tactical turn based puzzler. If this looks like your kind of thing just buy it -you won't regret it.

Ultimately this game just doesn’t respect your time & that’s why I can’t recommend it.

The good: puzzles at every level of detail, they just keep coming!
The bad: eventually you’re going to run into a wall where you only have one thing you’re trying to push forwards & the room RNG can spin that process out for hours.

Summary: Art Of Rally is a hard as you want it to be third person rally sim clothed in a gorgeous flat-poly aesthetic with a classic synthwave soundtrack to set the vibe as you drift round those corners.

Art Of Rally is a third-person rally driving game that hews closer to sim than arcade racer.

The authors have a deep love of the classic rally driving period of the 70s and 80s & it shows: Drive the (lightly disguised) classic cars of the group 2, A and B era & beyond into an alternate future where 800bhp super-rallycars were just the beginning. (All the cars have silly names; guessing which original car they stand in for is a personal mini-game in its own right! (You could cheat by looking up a guide, but what would be the fun in that?) They’re all there: the Ford Cosworth, Lancia Stratos, the wildly overpowered vehicles from BMW, Audi & so on.)

I bet lots of people have bought this game on the strength of the aesthetic alone & they’re not wrong - the game looks gorgeous: something about the way the lighting mixes with the flat-poly design language really hits the spot. But underneath all that lies a rally sim with a driving model that’s much closer to full-sim than arcade racer. It doesn’t go all the way, but there’s enough there that the skill ceiling is high. And yet, at the same time there’s still an arcade sensibility in there somehow; something about burning up the track as the sun sets just feels right somehow. Turn up the fabulous synthwave soundtrack, lean back & drift round those corners with the best.

Art of Rally is simply a blast. What more do you need?

NB. For those who care: there’s no in car-view in this came, nor a close follow third person camera. The high third person view eliminates the need for pace notes & that in turn is what makes the “turn up the music & drive” vibe that the game is going for possible. Sometimes it’s good to have a singular vision & stick to it & this is one of those times - if you want the in-car experience then there’s no shortage of rally sims that will provide it elsewhere.
