It's almost worth the mounds of hyperbolic claims it receives.

This is a good game with a few key issues.

Ultimately, it's a roguelike shooter and if you like the core shoot and loot gameplay it will hit the spot. Finding a powerful combination of items and weaponry is always satisfying. Killing big baddies with devastating firepower is always satisfying.

There are two things that I would like to see modified.

First, the game's regular enemy selection is somewhat limited, adding a handful of new regular enemies would go a long way to diversifying the experience.

Second, and more importantly, the game has very few true decision-making moments. There's no true "build" that you might seek to construct; the item synergy is so potent because essentially all weapons and items can be used together to great effect, with a few exceptions. Rarely do you ever see an item and decide NOT to pick it up because it wouldn't work with your "build." As a result, the core gameplay loop ends up feeling stale at times because you're not figuring out what works very well compared to what doesn't; instead, it's a luck of the draw where your current run's viability is entirely dependent on how many and what items you pick up. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but for those seeking to have a more strategic experience, the game feels half-done at times.

With all that being said, this is a great game with a stimulating core loop. I would recommend it.
