It takes all the "good" things from X - Rebirth, and adds them to X3. Quite a modern take on X3 really, and a much more enjoyable universe in comparison. I would say that the sectors are probably bigger than X3, and there's far more space to explore. It feels more like a sandbox than X3 really did in the sense that the main plot is far simpler than X3 (not sure if this is exactly a better thing, but it makes it feel more like you're shaping your own destiny). As always, the more DLC they add to their games, the better they get and that's not different with X4. Give it a try for sure.
