TLDR: Game is a lot of fun if you like competitive swordplay and have enough room space to walk around in while in VR, but online play can be laggy at times so watch out for that. Oh, and stay hydrated.

I've been looking for a while for game with good swordplay that didn't feel like I was swinging around a pool noodle while underwater. Don't misunderstand me though, I completely understand wanting to have realistic physics and you can't realistically swing a 40 pound sword around your head like it's a sock full of quarters, but having to deal with the molasses speed of a sword in a physics-based game does annoy me at times.
Broken Edge, however, doesn't do that and it doesn't want to be the next best physics-based sword-fighting game. I can swing my sword around as fast as I want to, but the game makes sure that you know that it's not the most ideal thing to do in all situations.

The ideal way of dealing damage in Broken Edge is to AWAKEN your sword. What is AWAKENING you ask? Well, you have to swing the sword in a certain way to make sure that your sword has an aura around it - which does extra damage to break your opponent's sword (which is where the name "Broken Edge" comes from) before you can really go in for the kill.
How you swing your sword to do that depends on which of the 8 classes you choose and they all feel very distinct from each other - so much so that I still don't fully understand how the Knight's AWAKENING is supposed to work.
I really like this system as it doesn't feel sluggish to swing a sword while still doing the proper damage you want to be doing, even when I need to move the sword slower to AWAKEN it.

Each class also has the same 3 abilities: Edge Breaker - which makes your sword fully AWAKEN and protects your sword from damage, Ward - which shields your body from a single, fatal blow (but only lasts a short time), and Second Wind - which replenishes your sword fully after it's been broken. All three of the abilities are activated via poses that are different for each class, but are always similar in the way that Edge Breaker is 1 pose, Ward is 2 poses, and Second Wind is 3 poses. Oh, and you can only use each of them once per fight, so you have to pick the right time to use it or it's wasted.
One caveat I've noticed is that some of the poses for abilities are a bit precise to hit at times, so it sometimes feels like you're just staring at your opponent while posing and nothing is happening.

Movement is also an interesting point for Broken Edge. The movement of your character - back, forth, left, right, and turning - is not tied to a joystick at all. You are fighting your opponent in a straight line (basically a much shorter fencing piste) and you must walk to move.
In that sense, I would not recommend this game to people who don't have the room space for it, as I think it would severely lessen the movements you can make and - by extension - the enjoyment of the game.
I would, however, recommend having water on hand to stay hydrated because the movement can be a decent workout.

One more thing I have a slight gripe about is the online system. Every now and then, I fight someone who lags so much they teleport from where they spawn all the way into stabbing me.
The Ping Advantage is real.
It doesn't bother me much, as it's only happened a few times, but I know that some people are very competitive and it would ruin their experience.

In Conclusion, I very much enjoy the game and I recommend anyone who likes swordplay in VR games to pick up Broken Edge and try it out. While the game can feel more like a VR fighting game more akin to Street Fighter rather than the usual sword-fighting VR title, the surrounding elements supplement the game into a fun and addictive experience that I will be playing more of after my muscles stop aching from yesterday's play session.

Early Access Review
I have only played 4 hours of this game at the time of writing this review, but it is honestly one of the most fun VR experiences I've had.

It's just tag, but as gorillas. It's so simple, but it's so fun to try to climb up and around everything to get away from the tagged gorillas. It also gives a decent workout if you play it for long enough.

The visuals are also quite simple, but I think it gives the game a nice charm that a lot of people will like.

I will say that you will sometimes find some undesirables in game, but that stems from it being pretty much only online and you can just mute them like in any game, so that's not gonna hurt the game any in my eyes.

Fantastic game, and it's free. I think I will be playing a lot more of this in the days to come

It's been 10 years since then, and the game is no longer on the Xbox 360 for 1200 Microsoft Points. Olympus has fallen.













Game's still good though
