395 Hours played
***The hours shown on my Steam account do not accurately reflect the time I’ve invested in Guild Wars. I’ve been playing since its original release in 2005—long before it ever came to Steam. It was my first MMORPG, and I’ve been part of this world ever since. I’ve also played Guild Wars 2 since its earliest beta weekends, logging thousands upon thousands of hours across both games.***

-------------------------------------------------

"The last day dawns on the Kingdom of Ascalon. It arrives with no fanfare, no tolling of alarms. Those who will remember, will speak fondly of the warm morning breeze. People carry on with their daily lives, unaware that in a short while... everything they have ever known will come to an end"

-------------------------------------------------

Guild Wars, for me, is a masterpiece, offering unparalleled build depth and tactical gameplay that still remains satisfying 20+ years later.

Released in 2005, Guild Wars wasn’t just an alternative to the MMO giants of its era *cough* WoW *cough* —it was a refuge. It welcomed players without demanding countless hours of grinding or a subscription fee, and in doing so, it felt unusually kind.

Guild Wars quietly redefined what an online role-playing game could be.

What immediately set Guild Wars apart was its respect for the player’s time. With a low level cap of only 20 and no subscription fee, progression was about mastering your profession rather than endlessly chasing higher numbers. The game’s skill system is its strongest feature: hundreds of abilities across multiple professions, yet only eight can be equipped at once. This limitation encourages experimentation and strategy, making character builds feel very meaningful and personal.

The game world is instanced, which may disappoint some players who are looking for bustling, persistent landscapes. However, this design choice allows for carefully crafted encounters and story missions that feel deliberate and balanced. The world itself feels intimate. Guild Wars' instanced design meant that when you ventured out with your party, the story belonged to you. There were no crowds rushing past dramatic moments, no stolen victories—just you, your companions, and a carefully shaped journey. Towns became familiar gathering places, filled with idle conversations, trading, and guild chatter.

Narratively, Guild Wars offers a rich, but understated story. Each campaign offers a distinct tone and culture: the classic high-fantasy hopeful origins of Prophecies, the vibrant and fast-paced urban environments of Factions, and the more emotionally grounded, character-driven storytelling of Nightfall. Eye of the North was released in 2007 as a bridge to Guild Wars 2. EotN was a love letter to those looking for harder endgame content.

Guild Wars is more than just an MMO to me —it’s a carefully designed strategy game wrapped in a role-playing blanket. Even years after its release, it remains a compelling example of how smart design choices can create depth, longevity, and a loyal community.

-----

20 years later, ArenaNet has come back to their roots and released a new update for Guild Wars, which is now referred to as Guild Wars Reforged. This, to me, is a sign of love and dedication from the developers for their game and this community.
